@EA_LeeuwIs this something that we can see fixed in 5.0?
It's a nightmare that this is eating up space on the precious system disk, when the game is installed on a dedicated harddrive for games.
Would be better if this can be customized or is located closer to the game. Or as others mentioned, in the appropate directory.
User directory is defiently the wrong place.
Battlefield 2042 is designed to use the Documents folder for its settings etc. It's not something that can be 'fixed', because it is not something that is broken. Battlefield 2042 is also not the only game that uses the Documents folder for things like these.
However, the feedback has been passed on to the teams.

I agree that settings etc belong there.
But compiled shaders taking 2 GB space is too much.
Thanks for passing it on.
- Rokebo733 years agoSeasoned Ace@Herdosratos just PAUSE the onedrive !
- BetaFieldPlayer3 years agoNew Vanguard
If other games also use the document folder then onedrive is unussable. so please remove this cache folder.

@BetaFieldPlayer better cfg settings from onedrive, Make sure onedrive is not running before booting BF2042.
with this app ya can disable onedrive and many more !

Can't believe 2 years later EA troglodytes still haven't figured this * out

Saving chache file in Documents doesn' t make sense.
I tried that several times but it always syncs the cache folder again ā¹ļø
how can something so simple not be fixed for such a long time by a company this big !?!? - 2 years ago
Is there any update to this? It is affecting my experience of this product quite significantly (and stopping my backup of important things).
Ps. Whether it's broken or not is a matter of definition. It goes against best practice, that's for sure. - 2 years ago
By the way, here's another thread on the topic. The issue was raised in November 2021(!)
ā½ Cache being saved to documents, which gets synced by Onedrive - Page 12 - Answer HQ (ea.com) - Rokebo732 years agoSeasoned Ace@CosaNoztra disable onedrive from booting with windows

@Rokebo73 What do you mean disable OneDrive? It's in constant use, just like I need it to be. The problem is not with OneDrive, it's with Battlefield/DICE.
- Rokebo732 years agoSeasoned Ace@CosaNoztra problem is development of onedrive.
The onedrive you use doesnt got enough options to exclude folders from backup.
Also disabling wit boot from windows isnt an option in onedrive.
Thats why there are tools, like revouninstaller, to stop onedrive from booting with windows.
Done with gaming, then enable onedrive again with boot windows.

@Rokebo73 Having more backup options in OneDrive is a different discussion and not at all the root cause of this specific problem. The documents folder is NOT supposed to be a dumping ground for non-user generated data and DICE is simply not following programming practices. I can see it making sense that save files go under Documents/Save files/Battlefield.
However, one could argue that Microsoft is too lenient in this, not enforcing software developers to follow the guidelines. Make a quick google and you'll see that DICE are unfortunately not alone, and generating many users upset about this lazy-developer behavior. Who's to blame, MS or the developers? I'd say both. But until MS does something about it, I'm still expecting big and renowned companies like DICE to follow best practices.
For reference, please read section 10 Desktop certification requirements - Win32 apps | Microsoft Learn - 2 years ago
I just noticed that there's an exclusion option in OneDrive, I just set it to exclude PcDx12. Will see how it goes and update everyone.
- Rokebo732 years agoSeasoned Ace@CosaNoztra yeah google around and ya will see there are more complaint about the minimal options in onedrive.
Ya could use the business version , got more options , or a other backyup tool.
And no its not Dice/EA , but the onedrive developer (microsoft) , this is on going for serveral years already <-- agai, google for it.
There are also other options to exclude folders from onedrive backup ,-- again google for it !
cheers - 2 years ago
@Rokebo73 I'm sorry but I do not follow your logic here. How can it not be Dice/EA if they are not following Microsofts guidelines and general best practice? Cache files has absolutely no business sitting in the Documents folder.
- Rokebo732 years agoSeasoned Ace@CosaNoztra guidelines ?
People decide what is being backedup , not microsoft with a half baken backup tool.
If they fixed it before there wasnt that many issues at all.
I dont want my shaders stored in other locations.
IKf they would save it in TEMP folder then i need to download everytime my shaders when i cleanup my temp folder and forgot shaders are in it !!

@Rokebo73 I could flip that around and say, why should I not be able to decide what is being stored in my Documents folder? I don't want non-user generated crap there, it's for MY documents. Simple as that.
- Rokebo732 years agoSeasoned Ace@CosaNoztra yes ya could say that.
But this discussion will never end.
There are 5 workarounds for sure to get this solved.
Onedrive should not boot with wqindows.
Use th md link option <-- google it..
Change group policys <-- google again
also a command with no backup (forgot how this was) <- google it again.
Use a other backup tool <-again google it.
and there are some other solutions <-- google again !
Cheers
know what to do , make sure ya be informed before ya use any kind of software , if it is a game or a backup tool for example š - 2 years ago@CosaNoztra This is what I did and it seems to be the simplest option.
1. Open OneDrive
2. Open Settings
3. Click on Advanced Setup
4. In the section Excluded file extensions, click the Exclude button
5. add the file type .PcDx12 (for the cache) - 2 years ago@EA_Leeuw I Dont want cache to be stored to documents it is annoying and it fills up my space. I have this problem only with bf2042

If i delete all the cache data do i lose any progress or hurt my ssd?

If you have an HDD, you can flip the cache to the HDD and you're done with the problem.
The cache updates every time, it doesn't work that once it creates a file the game doesn't modify it anymore, also whether you delete it or don't do anything with it the SSD storage cells get used up anyway š
The best thing to do is to move the cache folder to HDD and link it.
In the folder (...)\Documents\Battlefield 2042 this is what it looks like in my case
If you have only one SSD and no HDD, then don't link it - it won't change anything š
How to do linking you will find at this link (post #3)
https://answers.ea.com/t5/Technical-Issues/Cache-MUST-be-moved-out-of-Documents/m-p/13167854#M55201
Linking the cache folder to the HDD will result in the SSD not being consumed by the game cache (the game will save/modify everything on the HDD of your choice)

I didn't see anyone say that saving game/cache data to the "C:\user\My Documents" folder is a bug, what we're saying is that it is an issue. It may be a design choice, but it is an issue. Designing a game to save data to a location other than the install disk and to a location that is synced to OneDrive by default, (and often well before your game is installed) is clearly a difficulty that players are dealing with. Leading your official response with "it is not something that is broken" doesn't fill us with confidence that we are being heard.I have no idea what the development timeline on Battlefield 2042 is/was like, but Windows, an operating system that EA designs games for, has been syncing users' "My Documents" folder to OneDrive since October 2013. Developing a game that doesn't take this into account is an issue for your players.
None of this is meant as an attack on you @EA_Leeuw . Genuinely, thank you for interfacing with the community and thank you for forwarding our feedback to the game teams. I do appreciate that it is difficult and certainly frustrating sometimes (and I'm sure rewarding as well!) to directly interface with game communities.
