    I can only tell you what "solution" as you put, worked for me and I've explained it step by step and as simply as possible - was just trying to help anyone else in the exact same circumstances.  Purchased the disc version on the game, inserted disc, automatically launches two downloads/installations - one being the game from the disc, the other being a game/software update, with both being downloaded and installed concurrently.  I deleted the game/software update immediately before it had downloaded/installed, allowing the game to install in its original state, which made it playable.  The game/software update didn't appear to break the game when installed after the game had been launched first.  I can't explain it any clearer than that, or explain why it works, it seemed logical that the update might be the problem, hence why I tried those logical steps... possibly the game installs fully when launched for the first time, allowing subsequent updates to work.
