“Giving Up” Mechanic is Undermining Battlefield’s Core Identity

I want to share some sincere feedback about one of the most frustrating aspects of Battlefield 6 — the “Giving Up” mechanic.

As someone who has played the franchise for years and deeply appreciates what Battlefield used to stand for — teamplay, squad cohesion, and role-based gameplay — I find this mechanic not only disappointing, but actively harmful to the experience.

It Kills the Role of Medics

Let’s be honest: the ability to “give up” whenever you want has made medics borderline useless. Why would a player stick around and wait when they know 9 out of 10 times no one’s coming? And why should anyone play medic if most players just give up instantly? There’s no incentive to revive when no one believes it’ll happen.

In older games like Battlefield 1, you couldn’t give up unless the timer ran out — you were forced to hope someone would help, and it actually worked! I remember squads sticking together and medics being heroes. It created tension and reward. Now, it’s just: die, give up, respawn. No connection. No risk. No payoff.

It Breaks Squad Play and the Battlefield Formula

Battlefield is (or was) about cooperation. Roles mattered. Positioning mattered. Sticking with your squad was the key to survival and success. This mechanic turns all of that upside down.

Now? It plays more like a big, open Call of Duty. Everyone’s doing their own thing, running around aimlessly. You get dropped? Doesn’t matter. Just give up, spawn back, and keep running solo. Why bother with squadmates at all? There’s no punishment for straying from the squad, no incentive to stick together. You might as well just rename it "Team Deathmatch XXL."

The moment you remove the need for medics and the value of staying alive with your team, you lose what made Battlefield different from everything else.

It’s Not Just Pointless — It’s Frustrating

Laying on the ground, watching the timer tick down, knowing full well no one is coming because:

  • They’re 100m away doing their own thing
  • They’re not medics
  • They can’t be bothered
…is one of the most unfun moments in the game. You just stare at the screen, fingers hovering over the button, thinking, “What am I even waiting for?”

So players give up. Instantly. Every time.

And that destroys the whole purpose of the mechanic.

Suggestions:

  • Make “Giving Up” unavailable for the first few seconds — just like BF1. Give medics a chance.
  • Show clearer medic proximity indicators — let us know if there’s any point in waiting.
  • Add actual incentives to revive and be revived — bonus points, full health, etc.
  • Reintroduce squad penalties for lone wolfing — slower regen, reduced spotting, something.

Also, add penalties to the player who give up, like increase time to respawn. Same occurs if there's no enemy around and the medic is near, but does not revive.

Playing alone/with randoms is a pain...

Agreed. Spawn time is too short for players who give up. I truly saw no reason to be revived unless a m8 was standing on me already. Spawn time should be balanced to match the logical time before you would "bleed out" in some sort of manner.

  • i agree, i only play medic, and most of the time, people don't want to be revived, when i am down as medic, i was revived not often, so i give up waiting myself too !

  • agree. you should have to wait the full time on the ground to give medics more playability.

plus i think the pace of the game is way too fast anyway. its good to have longer respawn times

  • The issue they are trying to solve is that no one likes downtime, nowadays more than ever. It's one of the major things COD has on BF. If you've got an hour to play you don't want half of it to be spent literally not playing. In fact, the reason I didn't play BF1 despite liking it more than COD at the time is because DOM would last about 3 minutes and then it would take about 3 minutes to get back to actually playing.

If time between matches and round start was cut in at least half, I might not mind a couple of seconds of delay before being allowed to respawn but they are walking a fine line of what is tolerable downtime as it is.

That's the point, those "should" be different games, if you wanna play fast paced FPS then you can allways play COD.
Battlefield till BF4 was always a squad based fps, each class counted as much as another and imho, i would say the best example was BF2 and Bad Company 2.
I understand they have to be appealing for modern audience and ofc I would also hate to stay dead around 15 seconds but i also understand that it should be balanced and oriented to a teamplay rather than solo wolfing.

The answer for you will be to stick with your team and you might not have to wait 15sec.

  • Completely agree, and appreciate your thoughtful engagement with it as a mechanic.
