Feedback of a 13-year fan
Hello everyone! I played a couple of hours of the beta and want to give my first impressions and feedback.
As the title suggests I've been playing since 2012, started with BF3 and now own all the games that have come out since (except for 2042 because let's be honest, it's even less Battlefield than Hardline)
Let's start with the positives (at least in my opinion):
- DESTRUCTION IS AWESOME! this is exactly what pulled me into the Battlefield franchise at first: Someone is hiding in a building? BRING IT TO THE GROUND!
- Maps are great! As a person who thinks Bazaar is the perfect balance between vehicle combat and infantry gameplay, I find the current maps near perfect! I say near because I still don't have enough time with them to fully judge, but they're a far cry from the wastelands of BF4.
- Gun customization. YES! FINALLY! A way to balance meta builds that render 90% of attachments useless!
- Atmosphere! I played for like 2 hours and I already had a ton of "only in Battlefield" moments!
- Two gadgets! As an engineer main in conquest, I LOVE THIS SO MUCH! Because now I can carry AT mines with my rocket launcher! I love to use different gadgets and hate it when we have stuff in the game that no one uses but you just can't justify swapping the RPG for something else on conquest, this resolves that!
- Spawn beacon on Assault class! Such a power move!
- Dragging revive: LET'S GOOOOO!
- Different mobility and handling properties for gadgets. Yes! I love that I can't instantly switch to my RPG and shoot even though that makes things harder!
Now before we get into the negatives, let's talk about the typical performance issues you expect from a beta just so we make sure the devs already know about everything:
- Crashes on AMD GPUs
- Very low framerate
- Very low visibility (there's some weird smoke/fog all across the map idk if it's intentional)
- Caps vs lower case inconsistencies in the options menu
- Bugs
- Very likely some other stuff that I didn't notice / know about
As for the negatives, this is gonna be quite subjective in some parts, but I feel like I speak for a certain portion of the potential playerbase that was, has been, and still wants to be faithful to the franchise:
- Unlocked weapons for all classes. I think you guys should've learned a lessons from BF2042 and how appealing to COD fans (more on that later) isn't gonna lead you anywhere
- Sliding. It felt to me like BFV's slide. I'm of the opinion that slides should be in the game but they should grind you to a halt once you do them and not let you slip around like there's soap on the ground, and after a while it should start dealing damage to you to emulate wearing down your knee pads / uniform / your body getting tired of sliding over pebbles, as well as having a cooldown and becoming slower the more you spam them.
- The UI. OK guys I know you're doing your best, I really appreciate all the effort you made to make this game the best it can be so don't take what I'm about to say personally, I don't mean to undermine or devalue your work, in all honesty. Now to the rant: THIS UI IS ABSOLUTE AND UTTER TRASH! It reminds me of chinese free to play shooters from back in the day, with 3 different currencies and 5 different shops! Especially that crappy main menu! EWWW. And the hit markers man! THEY SUCK! This isn't COD (more on that later)! look at the satisfying hitmarkers from BF4 and how it shows you the score you got from the kill and the bonuses like headshots etc! and look at BF1's score accumulation when bullets started dealing damage to vehicles! Please just copy that no need to reinvent the wheel here! Seriously the UI is your first contact with a game, and back in the day we used to know whether the game was F2P or cost money from the quality of the UI. What we have now made the game feel sooooo cheap. It's also kinda confusing because I don't even know if changing my soldier's uniform (and gender) is implemented in the beta or not!
- Very low recoil. I played some BF3 yesterday and had the SCAR-H on my engineer. Yeah I guess you could guess the rest. The guns need a little more punch imo.
- No real test range. There's a small shooting room thingy and you can only spawn as support and can't even try out your gadgets. I assume this is temporary and we'll hopefully have something like BFV's test range on release.
- Can't hold grenades. Come on guys let me hold my grenade for a while so I can aim it properly, and maybe even give me the ability to cook it like COD (again, more on that later)
- No "standstill revives". You have to drag your teammate to start reviving them, which is kinda weird.
- No server browser in the horizon (As of yet). EA, listen, if you don't give people this feature, they will leave.
Now for the COD part: I'm someone who enjoys new things, I loved Hardline despite people calling it a fake BF title, and I was willing to give BF2042 a try even though it had things from the beginning that were pretty off-putting to me. I'm not against trying to bring COD players over to the franchise but you gotta get this, EA/DICE: If you make Battlefield similar to COD, THEY WILL NOT STAY! Because Battlefield is not as good of a COD as COD! And in the process you'll lose your loyal fanbase that has stayed with you for years! Look at BF1, it's the most successful in the franchise, and brought people over from different games but it was a PURE Battlefield experience. Instead of trying to make a more Battlefield-y 2042, just make a BF1 again! The game doesn't need stuff like "Sentinel" or "Killjoy" as names for bonuses when you defeat enemies or something. BF has its identity in Ribbons and dogtags, brings those back again!
In conclusion: Try to appeal to COD players as Battlefield not a COD knock-off, because in their eyes, it'll always be a knock-off / alternative.
