open vs close weapon system

I strongly believe Closed Weapons should be the default standard, not Open Weapons. One of Battlefield’s greatest strengths has always been its class system, where each role had a distinct identity tied not only to its gadgets but also to its weapon selection. This design forced players to think strategically, complement their squad, and lean into teamwork instead of just picking whatever felt strongest in the moment. With Open Weapons, that uniqueness is lost — classes become interchangeable, and gadgets alone aren’t enough to maintain meaningful differentiation. We’ve already seen with Battlefield 2042 that stripping away class and weapon identity damages the long-term health of the game, leading to balance frustrations and a lack of attachment to specific roles. On the other hand, titles like Battlefield 3, 4, and 1 succeeded because Closed Weapons created synergy between classes and gadgets, giving players a real sense of purpose and mastery. If the goal is to bring Battlefield back to its roots and restore what players loved, then Closed Weapons need to be the norm, because they preserve class uniqueness, strengthen squad play, and build the identity that sets Battlefield apart from other shooters.

And just as an FYI — giving players that sense of class identity and progression isn’t just good design, it’s good business. Stronger attachment to roles, weapons, and unlocks will keep players more invested, engaged, and ultimately more willing to spend money on the game.
