Yeah I don't know how to name the phenomenon, but it seems many 'modern' players can't handle when a game's 'atmosphere' might actually distract them from getting their killstreak.
Realism always has to be balanced with gameplay, but it does seem to be ignored more and more in favour of the killstreak obsession.
'Modern' players it seems would rather be in a sterile aim trainer then an atmospheric theatre of war if it means they can get a more clip-able killstreak.
All this moaning about 'modern' players is to say yes, I agree. There should be more realism in what happens in a war game. Suppressive fire should actually do something. Explosions should have an appropriate effect. Etc.
BF1 is acknowledged by just about everyone - even those that didn't much like it - as the most atmospheric. The reason for that is they incorporated the 'chaos' of WW1 into the play, including the gunplay.
It frustrated the modern killstreak obsessed players no end when, for example you'd get gassed and they had to put on a gas mask and could no longer ADS.
They simply can't bear anything - realistic or not - that might hinder their meta-plays.
