This is interesting how we have to eat male characters everywhere and almost nobody cares, but once someone somewhere in a while dares to add female protagonist\char, we have a screech all over the internet and requests for "gender neutrality" or whatever.
Funny, huh? But I ain't no рrick, unlike someone who wants to remove all females from the game, and I'll accept male support without second thoughts, as well as a way more male cool skins, like that one, scorcher, for nato assault
And what's more interesting, I didn't even notice that my engineer is woman, until I found related nagging in discussions

Because shoehorning female characters in this context has been recognized as a pattern of a policy/agenda pushed in the last decade or so. The DICE from the era of Battlefield 4 refused to do it. Then it started creeping in since BF1.
However it should be noted that most people are fine with anything as long as it is cool or enriching the experience. In fact depending on the game genre, many guys will not want to see a single dude in their game.
It is all about the context of the game, setting etc.

Most people will be satisfied enough with more freedom to who they can use in the customization or maybe some tweaks for the voices.

Actually me too, I did not notice until she caught fire. Then I got game of thrones season 1 flashbacks from that pyre. (I have to give credit to the voice actresses for putting their heart into those segments)
They are already male for all intents and purposes other than their voices
