Please Consider Increasing Party/Lobby Size in BF6 matchmaking

Hello EA Dev Team !

First of all, thank you for the work you’ve put into BF6. The game has been a blast so far, and it’s clear that a lot of community feedback has directly shaped the experience. It’s refreshing to see a AAA title where updates and balance changes genuinely feel informed by what players are asking for.

That’s exactly why I’m making this post.

One of the biggest pain points for me and a lot of players I’ve met is the 4-player limit for matchmaking parties. Many of us play with larger groups — in my case, we’re often 6 to 8 friends wanting to jump into matchmaking together. Right now, it’s simply not possible. We end up splitting into multiple squads, hoping we land in the same lobby, or constantly restarting because the game won’t place us together. And if by chance we manage to tag together, we will be split at the end of the game anyway

It breaks the momentum and the fun, especially in a game designed around large-scale battles and coordinated team play.

I’ve seen plenty of other players asking for the same thing, so this doesn’t feel like a niche request. Just to clarify, we absolutely do not want the squad size to change — having 4 players per squad is part of Battlefield’s identity and we love it that way. Since BF6 clearly aims to be a long-term platform, it would mean a lot to the community if the party/lobby size for matchmaking could be expanded — even just to 8 players would already transform the experience.

We love the game, we love playing it together, and we’d really appreciate a solution that lets larger groups stay united form games to games and enjoy the full BF6 experience without workarounds or frustration. As a small extra suggestion, adding an additional HUD color for people matching together (or for EA friends if that’s easier) would also be a nice quality-of-life touch.

Thanks again for listening to the community and for making such a strong Battlefield entry. Hoping this is something easy to tweak and that can be considered for a future update.

— A grateful squad of way-too-many friends

That's exactly what we need ! Hope they will be able to implement it in BF6. Thanks !

Yeah I hope EA makes a better solution for larger player groups. They have said they are investigating or working on a better solution but they haven't said yet exactly what it is or when we'd see it. Back when EA made Star Wars Battlefront 2, they let around 8 people party up in the main lobby and they just split the 8 people into two squads of 4 when they loaded into the game. They also made it so that the friends in the other squad had a different color than your regular teammates. It was a pretty decent solution. So clearly EA/Dice was able to do that back then. At minimum, they could do that again.

First, thanks for your time and the very detailed answer !!!

I think you summed it up perfectly: there are several workarounds for something that "should be simple", but none of them are truly optimal, and every option comes with its own drawbacks.

Either you’re restricted to specific rotating playlists, or you rely on Portal servers that might stay empty the whole session because they’re a bit niche for random players to join, or you end up dealing with platform-specific bugs, inconsistent join-game behavior, and other odd issues…

The last technique you described is pretty much what we’re using right now as well.
We have a first squad of four start matchmaking, and as soon as they find a game, everyone else rushes to join via EA friends before the server fills up. Then we repeat this again and again until we finally all make it in, and depending on the game mode, especially the ones with smaller team sizes, it can take a lot of attempts or even be impossible.
And of course, once the match ends, we’re forced back to the lobby and have to restart the whole process from zero, which gets tiring really quickly.

As a software developer myself, I know that features that sound simple on paper can hide real implementation challenges behind the scenes, but I still trust the EA devs to eventually deliver a cleaner, more reliable solution for larger friend groups.

Thanks a lot for the reply, really appreciate it!

Just to clarify: I’m not asking to change how squads work in-game — not the size, not the spawn system, and not the balance. All of that should remain exactly as it is.

What I’m asking for is simply a way for groups larger than four to queue into the same matchmaking game without being split into different servers.
No oversized squads, no special spawn mechanics — just a system that ensures friends can consistently end up in the same match.

The only in-game addition that could help would be a different HUD color for EA friends or for the players you queued with, so you can easily identify them even if you’re not in the same squad. (but that is totally optional)

Also, I might have misunderstood your suggestion about linking squads — are you talking about linking them directly from the main menu for matchmaking, or linking them in-game so they stay together after a round ends? Something similar to the current “stay with squad” feature, but extended to linked squads? The second option wouldn’t fully solve the issue, but at least once you manage to land in the same match, you’d be able to stick together for the entire gaming session.

  • There's around 6 of us in my friend group that regularly like to play together. Until Dice comes up with something better, here are the least painful options I've found for us to play in the same match:

One of the easiest options is to go to the "communities" menu on the main page of the game. In that menu, there are always a couple playlists that you can join and these put you in persistent lobbies so everyone stays together from match to match. The only thing is those playlists change every few days. I believe right now the playlists are Hardcore Breakthrough and Infantry Conquest. You'll also need to first join with one squad and then get the second squad to join through you so they get in the same match (after that you'll all stay together from match to match). The odd thing about the lobbies from these community playlists are that even though they are persistent and don't disband, they don't appear in the server browser. That's an unfortunate decision by Dice, but it is what it is.

Another option is to go to the server browser and look for a lobby there to join since those also are persistent so you'll stay together. I will mention the server browser filters aren't very good and tend to reset often. However, the most important filters to select are your region and also set the "player slots" filter to "Any" otherwise you won't see any of the full servers. Also, go to the other tab and select the filter for your game mode such as conquest. After that then filter by player count and hit the refresh option. There seems to be mostly hardcore conquest and conquest lobbies in portal. Once your squad joins a portal match then the second squad can join through you to get in as well. They can also find the same lobby in the browser and join directly but often they'll end up on the opposite team when doing that. One other thing to mention is that there's no option to switch teams if you end up on the opposite team as a friend. So if you end up on the opposite team as a friend, the only way to switch to the team they are on is to leave the lobby and try to join again through them...you might have to also get into their EA squad and try to join through them. If there is an open slot on their team then it usually will put you in their team. If there's not an open slot then you'll sometimes end up on the opposite team and will have to try again.

Your other option regarding portal is to create your own portal server and have your friends join that so you'll all stay together as well. If you set it to have backfill bots, then you'll need at least 8 of you to get the match to even start. If you don't have it set to backfill bots, then you'll need at least 20 players for the match to start. So that isn't a very good solution unless you've got a ton of friends to join.

One other thing we've done is we'll have two EA squads of people waiting in their lobbies, then we'll have the first squad's leader select to join a match. The second squad's leader will be in bf6's social page and have the first squad leader highlighted. Right when the second squad leader sees the first squad leader's social page show what match they are queueing into, then that second squad leader will press the "more actions" button at the bottom (on console this is "left stick in")...and they should see an option to "join game". So if they press this quick, it'll pull the second squad into the match that the first squad is queueing into. There's two wrinkles currently with this. One is that at the end of the match, both squads will need to exit and do this process again to join the next match together. The other wrinkle I've found is that if you're on Xbox, the "join game" button doesn't seem to ever appear if you're trying to join another Xbox player. The button does seem to always appear if an Xbox player is trying to join a PS5 player and probably also a PC player. Alternatively if a PS5 player is trying to join on a Xbox player, the button sometimes appears but often does not. If a PS5 player tries to join another PS5 player, the "join game" button does always seem to appear. So long story short, there's a bug where an Xbox player won't get the "join game" button while trying to join another Xbox player and it also sometimes happens if a PS5 or PC player is trying to join an Xbox player. So the solution to all this is that the main party leader of the first squad would need to be someone on PS5 or PC (so the "join game" button always appears for the second squad's leader) to get this method to work until Dice fixes this issue. I've already reported this join game bug so hopefully it gets fixed at some point.

This is pretty long but those are the best ways I've found to play in a larger group. Hope this is helpful.

  • It might be better to introduce a Squad-linking system, for example letting 2–3 standard squads of 4 be linked together. This would allow larger friend groups to queue and stay together in matchmaking without turning them into oversized mega-squads that break spawn balance or cause mass-spawn issues.

The game could automatically split bigger parties into regular squads and simply link those squads so they stay on the same team and in the same lobby between rounds. This keeps the 4-player squad limit intact while still supporting larger groups.

For edge cases where the party creates a single leftover player, like 5 players (4+1) or 9 players (4+4+1), that one player could be allowed to spawn on the main squad so they are not stuck alone. Any party that leaves more than one extra player, like 2 or 3 players instead of just 1, would simply stay linked without shared spawns.
