well i my self had this problem on windows 7
only way to fix it was to set on compatibility mode windows nt or 2000
but as your on windows xp the game should have worked!!
the only thing i can think of that can be problem is sp3 on xp
bfv was released on 14 March 2004 windows xp was on sp1 at that time
and ea track record of not fixing issues fit in as bf2 was released on 2005 they just forget about bfv

I found something interesting here : http://www.bfmods.com/viewtopic.php?f=12&t=9715
Tried the "WinNT4SP5VersionLie" way, same as the compatibility mode, BFV can't recognized my CD...
The .rfa is probably the root cause, but I don't know how to "extract" the file? If I delete the file it just makes no sound at all.
I used to play BFV on my P4 3.0 desktop, it integrated an AC97 sound chip, and the game worked well.
Maybe HD audio is the problem? Is something wrong with the UAA driver just like win7?
If so, but why BF1942 had no problem?
