This definitely sounds like a installation issue you could try a reinstallation which wouldn't take that long with Battlefield 1942. if that doesn't work maybe try to install battlefield 1942 into a different folder then program files.
because Windows 10 doesn't give full control over program files sometimes this is causing issues with old games because they actually store user data settings inside of the game folder .
so you might have to install into it entirely different folder which is not controlled by windows.
