Battlefield 3 PC bug: free look unusable with a controller.

Battlefield 3 PC version.

I use a wired 360 controller to fly jets and helicopters in the PC version.
The controls are mapped to the controller just as they are on the console version of the game. One can free look by holding down on the D-pad and moving the right thumbstick, as you do on the console version.

The problem is that turning in free look takes a very long time. The free look sensitivity is too low. The result is that a 90 degree turn in a cockpit can take what feels like almost 10 seconds holding down on the thumbstick, rendering free look completely useless using a controller.

Video demonstrating the problem:

Everyone using a controller seems to have this problem, with other controllers also but the 360 pad tends to be most popular.

The bug has been present since launch with no feedback as to when or even if it will be fixed.

I first attempted to email support and the response from "Kapil" was to "try to clear your cache of your Xbox console."

Is this the right place to have the bug seen by someone who can do something? Can anyone provide me with contact info for someone at DICE/EA who can fix this problem?

Many thanks

  • Have you tried using this little tool.

I think it has something for that Joystick sensitivity.

Thank you for your reply, I just tried that tool (seems useful for other things thanks)

I can adjust joystick sensitivity but it doesn't affect the Free Look sensitivity. There is a "Free Look fix" but that relates to not requiring a button to be held to free look, again this does not resolve the issue.

Yes, it is the way it is, with no way you or I can fix it which is why I was hoping posting here would result in someone seeing the bug who could do something, at least pass the message on. It seems (although I'm guessing here) like a relatively easy fix.

Battlefield 3 on the PC has native 360 controller support, it is plug and play, but there have been issues.

EA have patched and improved support for the 360 controller since the game launched. They updated to include rumble for example.

It's not unreasonable to hope that the bug can be addressed. Outside of this problem, the controller support is very good and the game has a lot of life left in it, not to mention another expansion pack.

It's nice to see that i'm not the only one having this issue. I too would like to see this resolved.

I started off on the Xbox beta and was one of the first 500 players jumping onto the eastern servers when DICE opened them up for the 360(stood in line for two hours at gamestop for the midnight opener...and all the server crashes that followed all morning long haha) But overall worth waiting for when i actually got to play through a match...and marvel at what i thought were beautiful graphics lol. After i got a copy of the pc version a few weeks ago, i felt cheated. Never before had sniping been so....so....crisp at a distance. No motion blur(so glad i can turn that crap off lol), and my frames don't drop below 60fps.

Oh sorry about the rambling, getting back on point. I was leading up to the fact that i still enjoy using the 360's controller, I used to be a keyboard and mouse junkie, but the smoothness of the 360 controller just make's sniping so much more easier to cold bore for me. For those who have played both the pc and the Xbox versions, i have to ask, have you noticed that the 360's version has quite a few more control setups and tweaks than the pc's? So with all those extra control functions, why is it that the pc seem's so lacking in optional control settings? If not for that i would be using a Hotas for my aerial combat. 😕mileyvery-happy:

I do hope DICE will fix the bug, I love flying the heli's but i had to learn how to fly(again) facing straight the whole time though, randomly reaching over to the mouse to admire the scenery. lol Either way the controller to me makes it easier to sneak, aim(i have a twitchy hand) and most definitely hovering with heli's without losing alltitude due to frantically pressing a key in an attempt to stay in the same place....Though if DICE incorperated IR tracking, i personally have a TrackIR 5, looking around in any of the cockpits of that game would never be the same again...and i look forward to that. Think about it, to actually be able to look down at where your going without feeling rediculous fumbling around holding a button, or going to 3rd person with a fixed camera aimed just slightly too high to land without hitting something. 😕mileyfrustrated:

Thank you for reading, i hope someone finds helpful/insightful information out of.....all this rambling!(points up, arms open wide)

Oh!! To any of the DICE or EA guys looking on here, please take a look into the IR tracking, i mostly use mine for War Thunder, and it changed the way i played and viewed that game within the first hour...and with all the tension that Battlefield 3 creates already, just from the sounds alone, i can only imagine what it would feel like with a pair of Turtle Beaches and an IR tracker making me feel like i'm really there in the vehicle i'm driving or riding in.

I'd probably have trouble playing other games after that...i play BF3 enough as it is haha
