Battlefield 4 Nvidia SLI unplayable

Good day all,

A brief history: I just upgraded from an AMD ATI 6790 to twin Nvidia GTX 460's.

Problem: BF4 is completely unplayable due to lagging/freezing after my upgrade. The game runs fine for a few seconds and then lags to such a degree that it appears as if the game freezes and then after a while the game responds again. The freezing occurs randomly and is not triggered by a certain action in game. After installing MSI Afterburner and monitoring both GPU 1 and 2 information (Memory usage, Temperature, GPU overall usage) via RivatunerStats I found that the game does indeed use both GPUs however the game uses lets say 58% of both screencards then the usage drops to 2% for a few seconds and then picks up back to 50+% usage. When the usage drops obviously that is when the game is freezing up.

  • I did install all C++ redistributables from 2005 up to 2013.
  • I did install DirectX via the DirectX websetup.exe as well as the DirectX included in the BF4 Installation folder.
  • I'm not using a custom SLI profile.

BF4 is my main game ^_^ that I play so I thought maybe I should test other games to rule out that it's the Nvidia cards or SLI causing the problems. I then installed Crysis 3 and Far Cry 2 and both worked fine with no issues.

Possible solutions I tried that didn't work:

  1. Switched off SLI.
  2. 32 and 64 bit version of BF4.
  3. Registry fix of MaxValue to 0 under ControlSet.
  4. Reinstall punkbuster, update and added BF4.
  5. Repaired the game via Origin.
  6. Reinstalled the game.
  7. Triple buffer and Vsync switched off.
  8. Set max pre-rendered frames in Nvidia control panel to 1.
  9. Unpack all CPU cores.
  10. Older version of Nvidia drivers.

Anyone had such a problem and maybe a fix for me? I would appreciate your help 😕mileyhappy: Can't play BF4 at all now 😕mileysad:
