battlefield bad company 2 asking for serial key?

I have bought a used copy of of battlefiled badcompany 2 and i was wondering if it still uses an online key?

I ask becasue evrytime i type the serial key for online it says that its already in use.

I also ask because i thought that EA has dropped the online pass.

    Hi,

    if you are on console the online pass was dropped so you cannot use it anymore.

    The online pass system however is still integrated in older games. For these games a free

    online pass is provided in the console store.
