Battlefiled 4 has Stopped Working

I feel for ya as I had the same issue until this summer, not sure it will be a fix for you but read the link I post as this is the way I fixed it for me some you have already done.

Nothing works so far. Most frustrating is that I've reported it to EA but no reply as it appears to fall on deaf ears or they're using avoidance tactics.

I failed to mention that I did other stuff besides what I previously mentioned, such as disabling Origin In-Game which is something that I always did for BF3. Sadly no difference.

Also tried for the hell of it, disabling Cloud Sync. Again no difference whatsoever as game always perpetually stops working after attempting to launch. Having said that I personally would not accept disabling Cloud Sync as I find this one of the most valuble features there is which has saved my neck more times than I can remember, so disabling it is not an option for me and it is not the cause of the problem either when testing it.

I also re-installed BF4 from scratch. This time though instead of downloading and installing the 'whole game from Origin, I first installed from the 3 retail DVD's and then updated the rest from Origin so that it was fully up to date. Again no difference what so ever.

I did some other things too, but nothing resolves the problem UNLESS as mentioned I switch over to the lesser Intel HD graphics 4400 integrated chip and then BF4 fires up and loads straight to the game with no problems - albeit unplayable frame rates because that chip is not built for serious 3D gaming (only Windows Store ones). When I change back to the NVIDIA GeForce GT735M 2GB dedicated/discrete graphics it's back to the same old story with "BF4 has Stopped Working" every single time. It never gets to the game because it bombs-out several seconds or more while attempting to load. Again switch back to Intel HD 4400 and it loads ok.

First thing to note is that the NVIDIA GeForce GT735M adapter/card does indeed work, because I am able to run BF3 (which always did run very stutterly on any card - something they never did sort out). So BF3 runs no problem and is playable with some stutter. Secondly I tried one of the only few other games I like in addition to BF4 & BF3 which is Homefront on Steam; that runs very very well, smooth and excellent detail to the point that it anoyed me and I kept saying to myself Why O Why can't EA/Dice sort out Battlefiled 4 to run as good as this! Thirdly I ran COD MW3 (I'm not a huge fan of COD's), as expected though COD MW3 is silky smooth even on highest graphic settins with frame rates through the roof, then again to be honest there isn't real proper fine graphical detail in MW3 if you look real close - still it's silky smooth. So in summery the GeForce GT735M graphics adapter within my laptop is working no problems.

Being a laptop there's no option to download the latest drivers from NVIDIA because with laptops you are tied and dependant upon when the manufacturer of the laptop next releases the next version. In the past I did update a laptop's GPU to that of the latest drivers supplied by the graphics card manufacturer, however that was a big mistake as that path leads to having many features within a laptop disabled or corrupted. Having said that, my computer plays other games (as mentioned above) very well indeed. The problem could be with Battlefield 4 itself and possibly with the developers not programming sufficiently to play ball with this particular GPU and maybe some others.

If anyone can suugest a genuine fix then please advise. Zorlacc's your advise has been very helpfull and thorough.

I would very much like EA to give me a genuine solution/fix please!

The problem is this  error comes from the video cards drivers most times :/ Not always but most times the other place I have seen it come from is having page file turned off on a PC from when I was testing with this error. I have 32gigs ram on my game PC but if I turn off page file I get the error again and no idea why as my ram is not bad and I have more then enough ram to turn off page file. If you google this error it is in so many games and programs over the years. 

I am trying to find what makes the error for you but Faulting module path: unknown  does not help :/ 

Did you already run Test your windows for errors if not I would do this ...
This works in all windows O/S vista Win7, Win8 and Win8.1 windows system file checker :] Copy and past this to note pad and put it on your desktop. As open programs can give you errors when you run this.

...... sfc /scannow ..... ever hear of it if not your going to love this .... it will inspect all the important windows files as well as the windows DLL files. If windows system file checker finds any issues with the windows files and windows DLL files it will replace them. This little tool as well as the event viewer saved me and fully helped me fix my BF4 issues as well as saved my .... many a format since I found it. This is the best toy they ever put in windows :]

For win7 go to start left click in search type cmd and right click cmd pick run as admin

For win 8.1 right click start bottom left of screen and pick command prompt admin

1 - Open administrator command prompt and close web pages and programs like origin.

2 - Type or copy and paste in sfc /scannow and hit enter, This takes 5 min to 15 min SSD vs HD

3 - This can go one of a few ways ..... no errors ... it fixed some errors ..... could not fix all errors...... does not finish checking and errors out ....... and the last one could not fix errors at all :/

4 -After its done reboot and do it again even if you had no errors the first time or had errors, could not fix ... run sfc /scannow again and when its done a second time reboot. You need to do this a and get no errors 2 x in a row ...

5- So if you ran it 2x and no errors your safe you can stop now for now lol, If you had errors first time but not the second then run sfc /scannow again and when its done reboot. You need to get could not find any errors 2 x to be safe. If it still finds errors try and run it a few more times until it finds no errors 2x AND ALWAYS REBOOT BETWEEN RUNNING sfc /scannow

6 - If you get a message indicating that it can not be repaired and you ran sfc /scannow more then 3x in a row on win vista or 7 mm you need a format or try repair win 7 :/ But after format or repair and all updates are done run sfc /scannow to make sure your windows is stable same deal 2x error free reboot between them.

If your O/S is Win8 or Win 8,1 then you can run this next command / line in administrator command prompt. Sadly this does not work for win vista or 7 :/ It will restore the health of your PC and you dont lose anything and it will also fix errors in the registry :]

dism.exe /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth ------- ONLY works for windows 8 and 8.1

7 - When its done reboot

Tried it all now lol. Still a no go though!

Had already done the sfc /scannow before and mentioned in original post (No. 6), but still ran it again for the hell of it. So Iran it, then re-booted and then ran it again. Still no joy.

Next I ran the 'dism.exe /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth' as you suggested (I am on Windows 8.1). Sadly still no change after running it and I even checked before and after a re-boot.

I also updated NVIDIA PhysX software. No change

I then totally uninstalled NVIDIA PhysX altogether. No change

I installed the excellent Battlefiled Utility Tool from Realmware in order to disable DX11 features (and thus DX11). No change

I disabled the Realtek HD Sound driver. No change. So I then completely uninstalled the driver; still no change.... Grrrrr

Because all other games appear to work fine with no issues, there must be some underlying problem with BF4 that needs an update/patch to be more robust with my Geforce card (NVIDIA GeForce GT735M) else why would other games run so well. As mentioned before, Homefront, COD MW3, Metro and others run like butter no problems. BF3 runs without any errors going straight into the game always, although it can get a bit stuttery often which is nothing new with BF3 having done this on every computer I've had before. Battlefiled 2142 on the other hand never connects; always gets perpetually stuck when attempting to contact EA Master Server, so I lost interest with that one. However BF4 is the important one for me and the one I wish to play the most. (funny how the latter three EA/Dice games are not the hassle free games).

I see EA avoid supporting/reply to this issue regardless of wether its posted on the forum or in the direct support request for which I still haven't received a reply - amazing.

Sorry it was no help. When I had  this error in BF4 it took me almost a year to find the correct fix for my PC.  And yes it was due to my PC and not the game, I had to deal with errors in the PC event viewer to start to fix my game for me. 

You cant compare one games to another game as each game has its own set of specs as to what it takes to run. The laptop I am on this sec can run LFD2  and BF3 smooth as silk lets say  but it runs BF4 like crap lags and only gets 20fps . If a computer just meets a games system requirements yes it is going to have issues in said game. I am not saying your PC cant run BF4 as I do not know your specs, I am just making a point on comparing one game to another for how smooth it runs.

Thanks for your input all the same, much appreciated. Yes indeed lets hope EA reply back to me as I had  opened a case with EA support some days ago now and awaiting their reply/resolve. It was one of the first things I had done.

Strangely enough I was able to play BF4 on my previous MacBook Pro 17" (Windows installed in Bootcamp). It ran better than BF3 did and the MacBook Pro 17" had a lesser graphics card. Funny thing was that EA told me point blank that they did not support BF4 running on Macs (even though a Mac becomes a PC 100% when in Bootcamp), yet it ran and I got to Colonel in both BF3 & BF4 from scratch while on the MacBook Pro. Now I have a PC laptop with a slightly higher graphics adapter and other higher specs but it's a no go.

I'll await EA's reply from customer support even though I have a strange feeling it could be some time.

Of course in the mean time if anyone elso stumbles upon a possible solution thats been overlooked and/or hasn't been mentioned then please share.

You could try this stuff it may or may not help BF4 stopped working is a cow to fix as what will work for one PC will not work for another PC :/ 

Run the game as Administrator:
Go to the Origin games folder (C:\Program Files (x86)\Origin Games\Battlefield 4) and find Bf4.exe. Right click it and go to PROPERTIES, then COMPATIBILITY and check the box next to RUN THIS PROGRAM AS ADMINISTRATOR.
Do the same with BF4_x86.exe as well.

Run Origin as Administrator:
Go to C:\Program Files (x86)\Origin and right click on Origin.exe and go to properties. Then go to compatibility tab and check the box next to RUN AS ADMIN.

Disable Origin in game:
In Origin - Application settings - Origin in Game - disable Origin in game

Origin Cloud Storage turn it off
Origin, settings, General

Make Sure BF4 is set to 64bit if your windows is 64bit
1- open origin and go to My Games
2-Right click BF4 and go to Game Properties
3-Under when launching this game set it to x64 and check off disable origin in game.
4- Hit apply and test you BF4

Another thing that may be worth trying: run a Clean Boot: http://help.ea.com/en/article/how-to-clean-boot-your-pc/
This should ensure that no programs are interfering in the background.

If all this fails to fix it then try this...

BF4 folder in my documents holds game configs and screen shots even if BF4 is installed on different drive. When you uninstall BF4 it does NOT remove this folder. So when you install the game again you can still have the same issues. Even if its not a new install it is still worth trying as the game cfg could be mucked up.

1- Go to my Documents and remove BF4 folder place it on your Desktop or trash.
2- Be warned you do have to set up your in game settings again.
3-Repair BF4
4- When done go test your game. If it fails reboot your PC and run repair game again and test BF4.
