I'm having the same trouble, unfortunately. I wasn't asked for updates though, so it must be something server side with Battlelog. If it were an Origin problem, by the way, none of your Origin games would work. I'm sure they're working on it. Battlefield is a huge selling point for them, especially with BF4 coming out, so I'm guessing they were watching for problems. It takes time.
But guys, seriously, calm down. Computers run into trouble sometimes, and updates are ALWAYS sketchy no matter what program you're running. Those (very, very few) of you who have done even basic programming like Java or C++ know that making even the slightest change in code can either improve it exponentially or break everything. Well, game producers are dealing with some very large sets of code. It takes time to implement stuff and, yes, it IS trial and error. And by the way, most programs these days (most in this case means "all") are tested by the consumer. It's a much faster and more efficient troubleshooting scheme than to have a few guys in the company try to run through every situation that might break it. Remember, Steam runs into a lot of issues too, and so do games hard installed on your disk drive. Yeah, EA seems to run into problems more often, but that's been true for probably longer than most of you have been playinig games on the PC... Welcome to the computer world in general. It's far from plug and play. If you want easy, buy a console. But guess what, you'll have the same trouble.
So all in all, take it easy. Go play some Halo or something and wait patiently. A night without Battlefield won't kill you. Trust me, I had to drive somewhere else to play because my internet is down, only to find out I couldn't tonight. I'm sure the rest of you can recover from the deathly walk to your desk and back.
