BF4 has encountered an error and needs to close - all of a sudden?!

Hi guys.

I'm new to these EA/BF tech support forums - I usually go elsewhere to solve my issues but I'm now at a loss so hoping someone can shed some light. Until around 2 months ago BF4 ran perfectly stable on my machine. I stopped playing for a couple of months due to work commitments and once my time was my own again (about a week ago) decided to pick up BF4 again.

Except I can't. Seconds into the game (somewhere between 5 and 30) the game locks up and has to be closed by windows (ctrl+alt+del otherwise can't reach the message box).
So. I reinstalled BF4.
And Origin.

And then the browser plugin.

And then I got frustrated by the general instability and slowness of my install and bought a new 2TB hard drive (decided I didn't need lunch for a week at work) and reinstalled Win7 on that. So, after a full format on a new drive and testing all my hardware as stable, installed the freshest of drivers and having a button to login time for less than 1:30...
BF4 STILL doesn't work

I've reinstalled the browser, the BHO, the game, Origin, I've run SFC /scannow more times than I can count, I've verified game files at least half a dozen times in the last 12 hours. I've also tried various combinations of "run as admin" on the various files that makes up the BF4 set on my PC.

The PC now runs stable (no crashes in 60 hrs continuous uptime other than one related to BF4 & Kaspersky fighting over system resources at one point - black screen, easier to button it than wait). No BSOD's, no nothing.

I've also ensured that all BF4 programs are listed as "trusted" in Kaspersky which they were before. K is also set to conceded resources to all other programs and to enter it's gaming mode when necessary (basically I know how to make it not be annoying 🙂).

The only thing I've noticed is that whilst the BHO IS installed on the machine, ESN sonar doesn't appear as a separate program anymore like it used to. Related?
Other games play fine from Thief (newest version) to Runescape, and I even get a steady playable FPS playing DayZMod.
Can anyone explain why BF4 has suddenly decided it doesn't want to work.

System specs
8GB Patriot ViperX 1600mhz

Phenom X4 965 @Stock 3.4ghz

2x Crossfire Sapphire 5770 VaporX @Stock or 900mhz/Stock memory (Catalyst 14.4 / 2014.0417.2226.38446, Driver Packaging Version 14.10.1006-140417a-171098C, Direct3D Version 9.14.10.01029, OpenGL Version 6.14.10.12874)

2tb Seagate Barracuda

Win7 Ultimate 64 w/ full Windows Update and all other 'usual' updates installed.

Cheers!

  • Thanks to a community post, I've finally solved this issue. It's not down to my hardware or my software config. It's down to the fact that after however many months of gameplay it's been decided that I can't use MSAA any more and have had to find a way to reconfigure my gfx settings outside of the game (because you can't even do something that simple without the game being live and stable).
And this suggestion wasn't made by EA or a clever dev. it was discovered by a community member with time and patience.
FYI it was 'DiamondLightning' who stuck it in small words so I could get to the bottom of the issue quickly.
Looks like the community outdoes EA on every level once again.

    Thanks Community members!

For those people coming here looking for a fix - atidxx64.dll had an error caused by BF4. (I'm running ATI cards). The issue is MSAA (or so I've read). I fixed mine easily by using AMD Gaming Evolved software (RAPTR) as it has a game gfx optimiser - using this I was able to disable MSAA and other graphics options outisde of the game without modding files or uninstalling anything. As my cards are low-level now I simply reset the graphics to "performance" and this immediately cured the problem as it removed MSAA among other things.
Hope this helps someone in future.

Something easy to try is a clean boot before starting the game: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135

Have you gone throught the cycle of installing Windows updates, rebooting, check for and installing more updates, reboot, repeat until no more updates are available?

  • Ohhh yeah. Spent the last 48 hours of my holiday 'playing' with Windows, I was awake for 36 of those updating, installing other softwares, rebooting and reupdating. I know the drill after this many years of homebrew PC's. Stick the coffee on and get comfy .

I'll try the clean boot thing shortly and report back.
    Cheers for the prompt reply!

EDIT: Just this moment crashed out of the game 4 seconds in on a lovely "clean reboot" of Windows (finding out about that might be handy for future debugging, so thanks!).
    Any more ideas? :/

  • I've since tried 4 more clean boots and received the same lack of success. Do you have any more suggestions at all?

In addition, I've played around with test range for going on ten minutes with no issues at all. Single player is also as buggy as hell - the cutscenes lag as per my first playthrough (but no longer crashes for that at least) however the game itself crashes when it attempts to enter the mission. I picked Kunlun mountains first but it does the same for the others.
