I had the same issue. I tried the MSI Afterburner solution, a repair and and driver update from Nvidia. Battlefield 3 did crash more and more often.
Following workaround:
If the Dirext X message appears your Direct X installation is faulty. Just check your Origin/Battlefield3/_installer/dirext/redist folder.
Choose DXSETUP.EXE for a new installation of DirextX.
This should help for 75% of you i guess.
If your PC drivers are not up to date this message might appear sometimes:
"Display driver NVIDIA Windows Kernel Mode Driver, version xxx.xx stopped responding and has successfully recovered"
I downloaded and installed "Driver Genius Professional". Driver Genius found a new Realtek Audio Driver plus new Nvdia Chipset drivers.
After this update i had no error messages any more. (since around 4h play time)
