Game does not start after downloading update (PS3)

Since downloading the latest update my game will not start...press the 'start' and nothing.  Have tried restarting, unplugged, ensuring disc is clean and even downloaded china rising and installed in...

Further update...after reading another post I signed out of PSN when the game was stuck and it then brought the menu up.  Try multiplayer and it asks to sign in but the same as the previous step, nothing.  Sits there trying but never does it, doesn't even time out.
