Hmm, weird. Did you try running the game as Admin?
-Run the game as ADMINISTRATOR.
Go to the Origin games folder (C:\Program Files (x86)\Origin Games\Battlefield 4) and find Bf4.exe. Right click it and go to PROPERTIES, then COMPATIBILITY and tick the box next to RUN THIS PROGRAM AS ADMINISTRATOR.
- Make sure you download and install the latest Battlelog plugins.
1: First uninstall the old Battlelog plugin by going to "Control Panel\Programs\Programs and Features" and removing "battlelog web plugin".
2: Then log-in using Origin and go to battlelog page where you'll be prompted to download the latest web plugin (once you try to join a multiplayer server using the multiplayer server browser).
3: After you have installed this Plugin you should clear your cache, exit your browser.
4: Then, restart your browser and re-login to Origin to ensure a proper install.
5: If this doesn't work then you should try a different browser (Chrome/Maxthon/Firefox, etc)
I have UAC disabled on my PC. Also might be worth noting that I'm running Win 8.1.
I tried running as admin as directed, same error. (everything henceforth is running as admin)
Uninstalled the browser plugin, restart pc, clear cache same error.
Tried using Firefox (was using Chrome), uninstalled browser plugin, restart pc, clear cache, same error.
I really appreciate your help thus far, regardless of the lack of success.
On a side note, I'm wondering if there is some unusual registry or similar trace thingyish that could be left behind from when I had the game installed on my SSD many months ago. It was working perfectly x64 and x86 back then. My process of uninstall and install has been entirely through the Origin client, not simply deleting/moving the directory, as I'm aware how finicky these things can be.

Hi again @TheMegosh, it sounds like you did everything correctly when you did that uninstall/reinstall - although you can never rule out some registry thing causing problems!
But surely the x64 version wouldn't be able to launch (as it does for you) in campaign mode too?
Did you try running the x64 version in compatibility mode for Win 8 (or Win 7)?
Try to keep this thread visible and you will get a solution to your problem.

Thanks again...
I did another uninstall and redownloaded the game and all expansions last night, without change. As someone who's faith in the game was low (the reason for my lack of playing, mostly caused by the seemingly infinite "????????" moments), this doesn't make me feel any better. Very disappointing after spending 1200+ hours on BF3 and buying premium for both.
As a member of EA, is there not someone more technical you can direct my question to? I mean it seems rather strange for it to fail so unusually. I would be happy to participate in any sort of "live" troubleshooting via skype or other in order to resolve this issue for potential others. As a programmer and PC enthusiast I personally would want to get my hands on my product in the situation it seems to be failing.

@TheMegosh, like most people on here, I'm not associated with EA in any way. I'm just a normal gamer like yourself, but who sorts out common problems.
You can get in touch with an EA games advisor for live chat and maybe they can sort you out.
Heres a step-by-step process on how to contact an EA games advisor http://answers.ea.com/t5/EA-Help-Beta/How-to-contact-a-Game-Advisor-using-the-new-EA-Help-page/td-p/2161281
