Solved

How do I fix my "connection to the server timed out" error?

I've spent a month or so looking around online for a solution to the problem, but nothing I've tried has worked.

Basically the problem is that every now and then - anywhere from every 5 minutes to every 5 games - everything in the game will stop; ie people are running but staying in the same place, helicopter rotors are spinning but the vehicle isn't going anywhere, etc, then 5 seconds later the game will crash i and it will say "connection to the server timed out". I can always rejoin immediately, as if nothing happened, but it's pretty annoying

I've figured out that the problem is not because of my computer, because I've played many hours at other people's houses (I have a laptop so I can bring it) without disconnecting.

So far the possible fixes having to do with network/internet I've tried are:

Disable upnp (which was probably unnecessary because I have an Airport Extreme, which I believe doesn't have upnp anyway)

Port Forwarding the ports that EA says to forward (however I'm not sure if I'm doing it correctly - Apple makes any customization unnecessarily difficult and confusing)

Using DMZ - again, not sure if I'm doing it correctly

Obviously, this error is really annoying and if anyone has any idea how to fix this please let me know

  • Ah, didn't know it was a laptop.

Well, alot of laptops suffer from overheating which can cause all kinds of problems. The only two things you can really do about it is to:

    • Buy a laptopcooler, which cools the laptop from underneath
    • Remove the dust in the laptop - spraying it off using compressed air is the most effective method.

You format your computer by googling and finding a comprehensive guide, but in general steps it's:

    • Take backup
    • Format your harddrive (effectivly deleting everything on your computer)
    • Install Windows anew.

Please accept the solution if it's correct and press the XP button if somebody helped you.

    Cheers

So I updated my drivers and now instead of disconnecting my computer crashes. I'll be playing BF3 and the computer will randomly freeze and play a monotone sound, then go to either blue screen or just restart in a couple of seconds. Any ideas?

You might have installed the wrong drivers, or something have definitely gone wrong. I would suggest you format your computer. When there's so much wrong with it, as it seems in your case, that's the easiest thing to do.

Also, I believe the cause for my computer crashing is GPU overheating; when i play BF3 it gets to 70-80 degrees Celsius.

I'm guessing that one of the drivers I updated is causing my graphics card (Geforce GTX 670M) to heat up more than usual.
