I have highlighted this post as solution, thank you very much for documenting this and everyone else for confirming it as well. We are still investigating this issue, but in the meantime please do not select "Indirect Fire" as your FIELD UPGRADE.

So what about people who are having issues with it freezing as you are joining? I also had mine freeze mid game and I haven't even used any field upgrade other than Defense.
