Jumping onto the ladder at the dam what controls on my xbox do I use

What I did was start running, when I reached the edge jumped and while in the air I pushed up on my controller stick so I would immediately climb the ladder when I neared it. I had to try it a couple of times but that method worked for me on PC, Xbone, 360, and PS3 when I played the campaign.
