Forum Discussion
I've read through the forums of pretty much every website I can find off of Google and not a single fix has worked for me.
My system specs:
ATI 7970 2PMD3GD5
AMD FX-6100 Six-Core Processor 3.30Ghz (Not currently overclocked)
16GB RAM
650w power supply
Windows Vista Ultimate 64 bit
Problem:
Frequent spikes in FPS. Using perfoverlay.fpsdraw 1 I am getting an average of 35FPS and it will range anywhere from 1-55 during a given game. Usually when I am shooting is when I notice it spikes down into the 20s and that's where my main issue is. Running around I generally don't get much lag unless two grenades go off far away from me and ill get a spike.
Attempts at fixes:
I've tried the following
1. Lowering Graphics (Small increase in FPS)
2. Turning up FPS (Larger but still not enough FPS increase?!)
3. Turning off AA (Gained 5FPS up from 30 to 35 now)
4. Inserting User.Config file (Not much changed)
5. Latest Drivers (Updated and noticed no differences, the latest for my card is 13.4 though the game tells me to download 13.9 which is only for windows 7 and 8)
6. Overclocking (I've overclocked several times and messed around with it, I gained a little bit of performance but nothing serious and it took several CPU crashes to get it to certain points where I thought it might work but to no avail)
7. Changing kit items to default items for support class (Did nothing)
8. Vertical Sync On (Lowered FPS dramatically)
9. Lowered resolution (No differences, and the game looks terrible and not worth playing at that point anyways)
10. Playing in windowed mode (I play like this by default so nothing is changing there, tried full screen, no difference)
11. Setting affinity (My game is running across all six cores)
12. Setting priority (No difference)
13. DirectX update (Up to date)
14. Punkbuster update (Up to date)
Things I've noticed:
My CPU usuage averages between 60-80% when playing and when I get bad FPS spikes generally the CPU is suddenly jolting to 100% usage.
Comparison tests:
I tried my laptop that has a i5-3337m with a 660ti graphic cards and 8gb RAM to see if it was an AMD issue or if there was any difference. Of course being a laptop the comparison is tough to make but I was getting a little higher FPS around a 45 average ranging from 40-50fps and never spiking down to 1-30 fps like I've been getting.
My friend has the same processor as me but with a 7800 graphics card and is pulling 40-50FPS steady with no spikes.
I've run out of ideas and it seems every where I look people are having issues and the ways they get fixed are all different or not yet resolved. Hope someone has a solution or sees something out of the oridinary. In BF3 I was pulling 80-90fps on not cluster maps. Metro I was usually 40-60 give or take location
