PBSetup.exe has stopped working

Hello Everyone,

Every time I try to run PBSetup.exe and press update, it crashes and windows gives me the error message "PBSetup.exe has stopped working". I have tried re-installing PB, rebooting the computer, forcing administrator, compatibility mode, but nothing works. I need to manually update punkbuster definitions using pbsetup because I can't play in-game without punkbuster kicking me for not having the latest updates. Everything used to work a few months ago, and then I stopped playing and wanted to get back into it, however I was unable to because punkbuster keeps kicking me in game. It won't automatically update the definitions in game and I can't do it manually so I'm stuck and can't do anything. It's not worth a re-install of windows, although I'm sure there is a way to fix this without re-installing. The exact code given when kicked by the game is

"Game disconnected: you were kicked by PunkBuster. Stated reason: PunkBuster kicked player 'CalculatedRisk23' (for 0 minutes) ... This PB Server Requires (A1390 C2.351) - Error loading pbcl"

I contacted Even Balance support and after one response they dropped me and didn't help me anymore, even though I provided all the information they asked for.

Here is the error codes that are created from Windows Event Viewer, in case they might be of any help.

  • Download the latest pbsetup.exe from the evenbalance website, the direct link is here: http://websec.evenbalance.com/downloader/download.php?file=1

    See if this works.

    Hey,

That's a no go. I've tried downloading and running it multiple times, but it just crashes on the initial updating process each time. I have disabled all antivirus, administrator, compatibility mode, and nothing works. I did a full uninstall of punkbuster and did a complete reinstall of it and the pb setup still crashes so its all worthless because I can't download the definitions for any game.

  • Maybe you have some malware on your PC. Try to use a tool like malwarebytes and see if it finds anything.

Yeah I ran multiple anti viruses and they all came out clean. I found a temporary workaround using safe mode yesterday, where pbsetup was able to launch and install all the definition to all my games. This means there is some sort of conflict with the application and an application on my PC. It's not worth going through and seeing what the conflict is because I won't be using PBSetup all that often, so i hope this workaround works for anyone with this issue. Thanks for your help though Soldato_Fantasma, I appreciate it.

  • No problem, you can try to disable all the startup programs and services via msconfig, maybe it will fix your problem permanently, here is how to do it:

Press start button -> type msconfig-> right click on msconfig.exe -> run as administrator

Press "Services" tab -> check "Hide all microsoft services -> Disable All -> If you want look the list and check the PNKBSTR service and other services that you think you may need (origin, steam...)

Press "Startup" tab -> Disable everything -> Enable the programs that you may need, like your gpu control program, your antivirus... (the less programs you have, the better it is)

Press Apply -> OK -> Restart your PC.
