Solved

Phone support just told me that I cannot install from DVD, must download?

That is absolutely insane.  It will take 5 hrs and chew up 2 month's worth of my download limit.  Surely it can't be right?

The other brilliant suggestion was that if a friend had installed it already I could copy & paste the files from their computer to mine(?).  He couldn't give me any reason for why they'd have produced 5 disks and sold them in the box if they can't be used.

Did I just get a tech who didn't know their job, or are EA really that loco?

Heading back to the shop tomorrow for a refund.

@Windsorandrew one user stated that going offline and allowing the autorun executable to run allowed him to install from physical media. He didn't say whether he unplugged his ethernet cable and turned off his wireless or just selected offline mode in Origin but you should play around with those options while attempting to install the game.  Once the game is installed go online and check for game updates.

If they sold a physical copy then you can install from the physical copy.  Are you running into an error when installing from the physical copy? If so what is it?

Installation from a physical copy normally has more problems than installing from the digital download and sometimes the only way to bypass those installation problems is the redeem the CD key in Origin and get the digital copy.  Be advised that even if you install from the physical disk will will still have to download the post release patches

That's what I would have assumed, but phone support guy categorically told me that was not the case.  To quote "I don't know why they sold you DVDs you have to download".

Thanks for the offline suggestion - I had a go at that initially but will have another try.  There's no way that should be necessary though.

Understand I'll need to download patches etc, that's pretty normal - big difference between a couple of Gb of patch and the 40Gb of the whole game.

    Success! Sort of.

I had to unplug modem but it worked - detected the disc and started installing.  Discs 5 doesn't seem to work, but that's a separate problem - thanks.
