Playing two copies of battlefield 4 (one on ps4, one on ps3) in one household(same ip)

I recently brought my ps4 over to a friends house who has a ps3. It was around mid janurary. We tried to play multiplayer at the same time. We know that we will not be able to both play in the same server (same game) together but we both want to be able to play seperately at the same time. If I was playing when he tried to join a game, I would be kicked. And vice versa when he was playing online. I called ea customer support and the service rep I talked to said she had not heard of that problem comming up at all. After hours of internet searches, it appears it is a major problem that even happened on BF3, andand might not have ever been fixed for that game. My friend does not want to spend a lot of time messing with router settings potentially causing other issues. Have either of the updates for ps4/ps3 fixed this issue? I do not want to take the time unplugging my ps4, packing it up, bringing it to my friends house, setting up tvs, and hooking back up the consoles , only to find out that it does not work. How was this possible on the previous generation of game (bf:bc 1 and 2) without messing with router settings and not now? If this is a widespread issue, it needs to be on the known issue tracker on the battlelog forum.
