And no, you are not delusional at all. But the explanation is very straight forward on what you experienced and why it went as it did. The server that you played on has a longer list of maps in its 'map rotation', as it is called. That means that the server owner has set a certain sequence of various maps to be served, one game round to the next. And when looking at the maps that are first listed there, then they are all part of the baseline BF4 game. But while the first 11 maps are standard maps into the map rotation, then the last 6 maps belong to BF4 DLCs.
So you have joined the server while it was running the standard maps first. But then you got kicked out when it came to the DLC maps, if you do not have those DLCs in your installation. Below, snippet of the server page, where you see it's map rotation switch from standard maps marked in green on the left, and then the start of the DLC maps marked in red...
