Re: Denial of Service Reporting/Mitigation

You can file a report against the player but the server crashes have been happening for years and I have yet to see anyone banned for it.

The perpetrators are using cheat software to crash the game servers through software vulnerabilies in the server code.

EA/DICE has so far been unable or unwilling to patch the server code vulnerability. Most likely because BF1 is end-of-life and no longer receives development support and there's no financial incentive to fix the issue.

Community servers under attack

  • This is different than the in-game exploiting that causes the server to just crash/reset temporarily.  This is 4 specific servers (3 on East and 1 on West) who are experiencing very high latency and packet loss.  Each player will see their ping go from say 50ms to 500ms. Packet loss can vary from 20%-100% and some players cannot even join the servers and are given an error message stating that their internet connection is too slow to play.  These same players can go to any other server that is not part of this specific community and the issues disappear so it is most definitely specific to these servers and seems network related.  This would lead me to believe denial of service attack.  It has (had?) been going on for a few days now and only affects these specific servers.  A player has claimed responsibility and said it was in response to them being kicked for not following the rules of the servers.

This post is less about taking action against the player who is more than likely using VPNs and fake accounts, but more around what can be done to stop this and any future attacks.  To reiterate, this is affecting network performance of these specific 4 servers and does not appear to be anything happening in-game as with other known exploits.  This isn't something that would require development work that won't happen.  This is something that should be done on the AWS side and should be handled between Amazon and EA.  I just want to know how to make that happen.

Oh and hi Pony Oskool :P
