@Lo1snake It's a decent LMG, I used it loads when I first unlocked it and it was good for running and gunning. In my mind there are better choices for shooting at planes though, like the M1917 which has loads of ammo and is accurate at range.

I used the air mortar on Cape Helles, mode Operations, defending team,
and it worked like a charm
I think I had 13 kills in one game
In Operations, the enemy just bunches up toghether, as opposed to the other modes where everybody is all over the place
And then, it's easy to hit people. You can be just far enough, and behind a hill, only have luck no other mortar is trying the same.
Now, the gun, the Parabellum - I can see it's easier to take down a plane, compared with other guns, but it still is job. In fact, it's still very hard it seems, while planes are still overpowered two the second degree ..
The Lewis gun is not good for that either, but the M1917 I havent tried against planes I must say.
Glad you finished the mortar part! Like others have said the Parabellum is a good gun for run and gun play style. To me the M1917 is the best plane killer. Here's a tip for downing planes, camp out by someone using the AA gun. Sure you or they might steal a kill but your working towards the same goal! Good luck and happy hunting!
Bombers are easy with the M1917, just remember to let up on the trigger every so often to avoid a jam.
Ground attack aircraft are another matter. I’ve taken down a couple with the Burton LMR with the incendiary rounds. Plus a few with the AA rocket; but, it’s really hard. A good pilot is on you immediately and you’re dead. Don’t think I have ever taken down an attack aircraft with the M1917. If the M1917 came with incendiary rounds it would be hell on aircraft!
Took down a bomber with the Enfield Carbine the other day. Not sure how many rounds it took; but, was amazed when I did it. It was flying low and I could easily hit the engines.
Best weapon is an AA gun or another aircraft.
I'll try the M1917 for taking out planes .. I usually get that one for what I call "suppressive sniping", never used it to down a plane.
The Parabellum I have tried now, and it could work, if the plane is damaged already, and the pilot not very good. So, that doesn't happen a lot, since the bad pilots usually get killed before they even can attack you. And the good pilots, well they kill you.
Camping close to an AA gun seems the best option, and try and hit damaged planes, either with the Parabellum or the M1917. Somebody suggested the MG15 as well, which is a gun I like a lot but haven't used a lot to hit planes ..
