Before May 11, the game did not necessarily require Playstation Plus. But now, if I try to launch the game, I am required to purchase Playstation Plus to play online again.
What ever happened to the game being free-for-all?

the necessity of having either a Xbox Live Gold or PlayStation Plus membership is down to the first party, being either Microsoft or Sony. This is required for any multiplayer game and not particularly related to Battlefield 1 only.
If you play on PC, you can launch the game through Origin and need no extra subscription in order to play online. As Archi mentioned earlier, this is also stated in the PlayStation / XBox Store as well as on the back of the packaging for the retail version.
