Reverting from 144hz to 60hz everytime I alt tab out

Re title.

Weird thing is, it will say 144hz in the options menu when I go back into the game, but there will be screen tearing (have a freesync monitor) and the difference in mouse movement between 60hz and 144hz is night and day.

When I go back into the game, I have to change it back to a different refresh rate, then select 144hz again, and it will be playing at 144hz, doing this everytime I go back into the game after alt tabbing out can get pretty damn annoying, and it also causes the game to crash on occasion.

Selecting borderless window eliminated this problem, but not without introducing its own set of troubles.

like the frame rate not being capped at 144hz, which causes annoying screen tearing when it goes above 144fps, also the performance isn't quite what it is in fullscreen mode.

Any possible fixes out there?

  • @indifferentSock I game with three 144hrz screens and do not have this issue and I get well over 150fps and I can alt tab out with no issue so I am thinking it is a conflict someplace or a setting. So things to do.....

First be sure  on desktop and in video card control panel both are set to 144hrz for your  screen

Second please do this for settings...

    Disable Origin in game:
In Origin - Application settings - Origin in Game - disable Origin in game

Origin Cloud Storage turn it off
    Origin, settings, General

Make Sure BF4 is set to 64bit if your windows is 64bit
1- open origin and go to My Games
2-Right click BF4 and go to Game Properties
3-Under when launching this game set it to x64 and check off disable origin in game.
4- Hit apply REBOOT your PC and then test your BF4

Next in game video card settings please do this....

In game video settings right side set to custom and set everything to medium or low but last three turn them off ....

    1-antialiasing deferred off
    2-antialiasing post off
    3-ambient occlusion off

On left side be sure vertical sync is OFF  and if your video card is not a beast then also set resolution scale to under 100 like 95 or 90 this will up you FPS

Now test BF4 and see below if you still have issues

If all this fails to fix it then try this as you  may well have a conflict in cfg and it is best to start over with it...

    C:\Users\your PC Name\Documents\Battlefield 4

BF4 folder in my documents holds game configs and screen shots even if BF4 is installed on different drive. When you uninstall BF4 it does NOT remove this folder. So when you install the game again you can still have the same issues. Even if its not a new install it is still worth trying as the game cfg could be mucked up.

1- Go to my Documents and remove BF4 folder place it on your Desktop for now.
2- Be warned you do have to set up your in game settings again.
    3-Repair BF4
4- When done go test your game. If it fails reboot your PC and run repair game again and test BF4.

  • Thanks for the reply, the first suggestion proved to be the fix!

I ensured that the refresh rate was 144hz in my gpu control panel, and so assumed all was right with the world!

Did not think about the setting within windows.

Would have thought that changing the setting on one would have changed the setting on the other.

Also, I'm *, thanks for pointing out what was right infont of my face this whole time!

@indifferentSock Easy mistake to make more so with a new toy and I was more then happy to help you :} I marked the solution on my post so it will help others down the road as you are far from the only one to not do a setting like this. When I first got my three 144hrz screens I missed the same thing only in game for a few min lol all due to new toy and the eye candy they give in BF4 on 60hrz  lol.
