Xbox live Subscription in order to play

Do you need to have a xbox live gold subscription, in order to play battelfield hardline online?

I am asking because my subscription expired 6 months ago, though only yesterday I started getting this message:

"you must have a xbox live gold membership to access online features"

    Hi @cynaxon!

    Yes a gold membership is needed in order to access online features. Can't tell you why you were still able to play even if your subscription expired.

    As stated, you need a subscription, I'll mark the post as the Solution.

    I'm not sure why you could play before, perhaps if you share the console with another player you were able to use their Gold subscription for the past 6 months?
