Battlefield V Review and Mistakes

Hello. I play battlefield instead of games like call of duty and any other because battlefield has much more capabilities. Giant matches with 64 players and many features and gadgets make battlefield a much better game. With battlefield v, I think battlefield made a couple main mistakes. This is a game franchise with capabilities that we’ve seen are much bigger than any other game, it was extremely sad to see these capabilities wasted on making the game unrealistic. I will feature each mistake below one by one:

Adding women to a World War Two setting - It isnt sexist to disinclude women in a World War Two game. Many people like me play battlefield because it is realistic, so to see them rewriting history this way was disappointing. If you were a World War Two veteran and fought for your country, you would at least expect the tales of your experience to be told with at least basic accurate details. You don’t want random things to be added into your story. Adding women to the Soviet army would have been ok, because it’s historically accurate. Otherwise, not really.

Uniforms - I don’t know why all of a sudden in 2018, battlefield came up with their own uniforms for the German and British armies. If they are going to have unrealistic uniforms then at least have realistic ones too. But there weren’t even realistic ones. In my opinion the unrealistic uniforms never should have existed and only realistic ones should have been implemented, but not only did they have unrealistic ones, they took out the realistic ones. Disappointing.

Flags - I understand why people have come to hate the swastika, it’s tragic what happened to so many under this flag. But using the authentic German flag to make a game more realistic doesn’t make you a Nazi. I think the authentic flag should have been used because if you choose a World War Two game, you get World War Two. No matter what, it’s a part of history we shouldn’t forget. It’s not a matter of opinion. Real people lived in that era, the least we can do is make the game according to facts, not our own opinions.

Maps - I actually think battlefield did a great job with the maps. They were beautiful (except some that I didn’t like just because of personal preference but ignore that). But it’s a World War Two game and we didn’t see a single Stalingrad, Normandy, Berlin, etc.

Updates and game support - Battlefield had so much going for it. We should’ve had factions like Italian, Russian, French, etc. Battlefield had so much more it could’ve done and with four factions and a couple maps after two years, I’m disappointed. We paid money and we weren’t shown that it was very worth it at all. A game with a capacity like battlefield could do so much more, but battlefield five dissapointed me here.

Realisticism - Inaccurate uniforms, etc. Come on. It’s completely okay to make a game more realistic, even if it means making the tanks slower and turrets rotate slower, this stuff doesn’t slow down the game, it just makes it all the more enjoyable.

Thats pretty much it. I love battlefield so much, I’m just sad to see this happening. I am probably not going to buy a new battlefield game for a while, I only enjoy games set in the past like the 20th century. I don’t like modern and futuristic games. I hope battlefield makes a game set in the 20th century again soon. Many if not most of the battlefield community play more for the amazing experience than we do just for skill. That’s what distinguishes us from other games. I personally think that the more realistic and historically accurate, the better the game. I hope battlefield pull through with this, I know they take the community seriously.

There are a lot of people who feel the same way as you mate; at the very least the team was able to tweak the colours of most uniforms and give the community more weapons with the last update.

In the end I think the team definitely could have gone a different route for the game (just looking through the artbook you can tell the original vision and launch product were dramatically different.

I totally agree they need to focus on their roots - whether they pull from the past or look to the future, there is plenty to choose from. As long as they learn from their mistakes here I'll be happy with whatever

  • Hey @panzerman2003

I just have a few things I think need to be addressed.

Women participated in most, if not all wars and nobody really had a problem with it in BF1 - times have changed and that means adding some diversity (for better or for worse). I agree it can seem like pandering at times - there would appear to be a fine line.

Battlefield may be slightly more grounded  than other titles but it certainly isn't realistic and has never claimed to be; they said even before V launched this was their take in WWII and wasn't going to be a 1:1 recreation.

Same goes for uniforms and stuff - they can't have large quantities of purchasable cosmetics that are entirely authentic and they need to make some of the crazier designs Boins only.

Certain countries don't allow swatztikas in products and it can hurt sales - the team needs to take the playerbase into account and look at analytics to see what's appropriate. I do agree they need to find a way to make it work though.

Again, the team said this was their take on WWII and wanted to focus on lesser known battles. Stalingrad and Dday etc would be cool but they've been done to death at this point. If anyone can do that right though, it's DICE.

Majority of players love BF3, 4, and the BC franchise - it would work best for the team to focus on a modern or futuristic setting in my opinion. Not to discredit the earlier titles by any stretch, I just think 3 older eras could be exhausting compared to an anything goes approach to futuristic.

  • I agree with you. I guess I wasn’t really considering these things and I was focused on personal preferences. Thanks for showing me what I was missing.

  • @panzerman2003 It takes a mature person to listen constructively to another persons perspective and a bigger person to take it onboard whether they agree or not. It sounds like you both truly love the game and historical accuracy, all I can say is try not to dig too deep into the historical accuracy of this title and try enjoy it for the arcade/semi simulation style shooter it was meant to be.

BF1 had far more many historical inaccuracies yet no one really said much as many people know more about WWII and less about WWI. I can almost guarantee most of us including the devs, wanted BFV to be bigger than it is but such is life. The last 2 years and especially 2020 hasn't been kind and game developers have suffered quite a fair bit, let's just take a moment to give them a breather and enjoy what we have, otherwise we'll only depress each other on going on about what we could of had 🙂
  • As long as it’s battlefield, you’ve gotta love it. There are always things that can be improved, but it’s all right.

Regardless, I think battlefield did a great job when it came to hearing out the community. Never did I ever feel ignored.
