[PC] System crashes after a few minutes of playing Battlefield V

Hi All,

Unfortunately I am experiencing consistent crashes to black screen after a few minutes of playing Battlefield V. This seems like a full system crash of my PC itself because the monitor says "no signal", the machine becomes unresponsive, and even the RGB lights on my keyboard and mouse turn off. I *suspect* these are GPU crashes, but I still am confused as to why it would turn off mouse and keyboard RGB. Perhaps it's a GPU crash + BSOD which I can't see because the display dies. So far this isn't happening on any other game. Halo: MCC and Mafia Definitive Edition both run smoothly for at least an hour or more at 4K 60Hz set, so I am thinking/hoping it is a software or config issue. For further context, I don't experience any slow downs or stutters in game before it crashes. It runs totally smoothly and then just crashes. Also this has happened at different points: sometimes in the middle of a match, sometimes right when a match ends, sometimes right when joining a match, etc. But anyways, here are my system deets:

Windows 10 Home Version 20H2, OS Build: 19042.685, Experience: Windows Feature Experience Pack 120.2212.551.0

CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 1700X

GPU: nVidia GeForce GTX 1080 Ti (it's a factory-overclocked EVGA Hybrid SC2, but I experience this crash even when I put the GPU in debug mode which should disable the OC)

GPU Driver version: 460.89

RAM: 32GB

Storage: 1TB SSD

Origin client version: 10.5.90.45798 - 766694

Battlefield V Version: V.26502

Graphics settings used in BF V:

Resolution: 4K @ 60Hz

DX 12: Off

HDR: Auto

Framerate Limiter 200

Future Frame rendering: On (if I am remembering correctly)

V-sync: On

DxDiag attached. I didn't attach a video because I'm guessing it won't even save properly since it's such a hard crash, but let me know if it is still possible to get a video with this type of crash and I'll give it a shot. I'm not sure how to get any crash dumps or error logs or anything. I checked the Windows Event Viewer and this crash does not come up there, only the subsequent "the system did not shut down properly" after I have to hold the power button to restart it. If there is any other log or dump or anything I should look for, please let me know.

What I tried so far (all to no avail):

1. Turn off Origin in-game Overlay in the Origin Launcher

2. Clear Origin Cache: https://help.ea.com/en-us/help/faq/clear-cache-to-fix-problems-with-your-games/

3. Uninstall Origin (and then re-install): https://help.ea.com/en-us/help/origin/origin/manually-uninstalling-origin/

4. Run Origin and Battlefield V as Administrator

5. Set GPU to Debug mode

6. Exit GeForce Experience and Steam before playing

7. Rolled back and tried a few older GPU drivers

8. Uninstalled GeForce Experience

9. Turned off GeForce Experience in-game overlay

Would REALLY love some help with this issue. Thanks a bunch in advance!

Best Regards,

Mike

Great news!!! I FINALLY seem to have fixed this issue. Turns out the solution for me was... ::drum roll:: .... to re-install the game 😞 lol. Guess that's a lesson, don't overlook the simple/standard solutions first lol

    Hi @GaMeBoY439748,

Have you been keeping an eye on your temperatures and power usage leading up to when this happens? Are you seeing anything out of the ordinary there before the crash happens? Also, what is your GPU and CPU usage looking like?

    /Kent

  • Hi @EA_Kent, thank you for your response! Is there a way I can either monitor or log temperatures and power usage while the game is running? If so, I’ll try it again and report back on what they look like before the crash happens. Also, what’s the best way to view GPU and CPU usage during the game as well? Does Battlefield V offer any overlay settings that let me put this information on screen while I’m playing?

Thanks so much for the help!

Possibly interesting update on this issue: I just tried it with lower graphics settings (Low preset, 1024x720 resolution @ 60Hz, HDR Off, Future Frame rendering Off, Framerate limiter: monitor refresh rate) and the game ran way longer than before but sadly still crashed. I was able to play a full match and a half of Conquest and then it crashed when the match ended, probably after about 30 to 40 minutes of gameplay. With graphics settings maxed out, it crashed much quicker (after about 5 or 10 minutes).

I'm not sure what exactly, if anything, this tells us but I thought it would be useful information to share. Perhaps the GPU is getting overwhelmed after all, and it takes longer to get to that state when on low graphics settings. However, I still can't imagine how a GTX 1080 Ti is being overwhelmed by Battlefield V, especially on low graphics settings after only 40 minutes of gameplay O_O. Maybe it's a weird power issue? I'm so far not seeing this in other games, so I don't *think* it's the PSU but I could be wrong.
