It’s worse than that. It’s getting to the stage where I regularly see pilot players going 130-0 in breakthrough. I’ve seen squads of them go, combined, 250-0 in breakthrough.
It ruins games. Usually when these guys show up you are assured of a completely lopsided game and a lot of players on the non-pilot side just quit - which makes the game even more lopsided and not fun. These days when I see these pilots on the other side I just quit - although I’m stubborn enough to sometimes use the aa against them (which I’m very good at) until I go 10-0 (the pilot being 10).
dice needs to tweak the scoring so there’s high points for shooting down planes, especially bombers and much lower points for killing guys on the ground. That’s because there’s no incentive for planes to shoot each other down. Watch them on the minimal - both sides planes spend large periods ignoring each other and doing bombing runs - sometimes side by side.
then rather firing rate on a needs to be drastically upped. As you say it’s impossible to shoot down most planes.
other TERRIBLE features of the plane system: pilots can always see guns on their mini maps and screens If they want - it’s in the game settings. That should go because what they’re really doing is just lining up on that and bombing striding. I know that because I often fire on them and move to the side. They’ll keep bombing a gun site even if you’re not in it. Why? Because they can’t actually see you; they’re just attacking based on their mini map. That’s how easy it is. By comparison a gun pit is terribly sited, terribly protected, and you can’t see planes until they’ve come roaring in and killed you. Making the aa guns an exercise in unbalanced masochism. The gun-it’s need proper protection and they need to be better sited so they have the clear fields of fire they need.
The guns also need better sights, especially at long range. I can hit a plane at max range. It will then - at max range - release a bomb that will hit me precisely. That’s physically impossible but it’s what the experienced pilots do. Against that a gun is 100% undefended and indefensible. The gun needs better range and better sites, not to mention a better rate of fire. If you’re a plane and you want to knock out an aa you need to be made to work for it.
then there’s the weapons. Japanese planes with napalm? No. Rockets in 1940? No. Someone at dice doesn’t know their history. Planes were NEVER effective tank busters during ww2. That’s a myth. They could be used to hit tanks but their successes were rare. Stukas were only effective ground support precision bombers when the German had 100% air superiority. Almost all of the maps are unrealistic open field maps with no woods or cover, making tanks extremely vulnerable.
the plane system and the complete lack of any way to counter that - combined with pilots of both sides being obsessed with KDRs and just wanting to drop bombs on people (I’m convinced most of the good plane pilots have OCD - what’s fun about going up and down for a whole game and just dropping bombs on people?) - is ruining this game. It definitely needs to be fixed.
This is a lot to unpack here so I'll go through this as well as quick as I can. I'll be taking all of this from the view of a dedicated dogfighting pilot within this franchise.
First I agree that the Pacific aircraft are overpowered as well as the VB/Mosquito rockets but unlike the Pacific aircraft the British Rockets are merely an accidental buff that I am sure will be reduced in the next update. I have been very vocal from the beginning Pacific planes were given far too much firepower, especially against infantry and it's not right.
I know many 'new generation' pilots will chastise me for this as I HEAVILY disagree with infantry/tank farming and it really makes my blood boil when I see enemy aircraft avoiding each other and at times strafing side by side as they want a zero death game. Since December I have actively seeked players on the world leaderboard that have been rising to the top based on nothing more than farming breakthrough Pacific maps.
Regarding AAs not being effective and require a buff to range, this I can tell you is just not the case. As a pilot I can tell you right now that AA's are by far the biggest threat to me a a fighter and shooting me at long range just tells me exactly where you are and you better believe I'm going to gun straight at you.
The 37mm and 40mm AA's are monsters that can do between 12 - 16 damage per hit, firing 3 rounds a second, can reach a range of roughly around 1km - 1.2km on some maps and have a blast size so large I can still get destroyed below a cliff or behind a mountain because of the large AOE.
Now I rarely use AA as I'm 99.99% in the air but occasionally I like to get my boots dirty with some mates. Using the AA, so far I've been able to down every aircraft because I know how pilots act. Treat AA like a shotgun; useless at long range, deadly at short!
DO NOT fire it at long range, wait until they're coming in for a strafe/bomb run and wait until they're within 400m give or take. This will stuff up any bomb run if they have to redirect to you so you'll be safe, it'll also panic the pilot as you've just put them in a position where they can't get away quick enough from each shot. 3 - 5 seconds is all it takes to down even something as big as a JU88
Lastly the best defence you have against pilots is another pilot, so find people who like to fly, make friends with them and have them watch your back and keep the skies clear.
BFV is about teamwork, from the tanker pushing back enemy armor, the infantry pushing the objective and from the pilots in the clouds above...
I hope this has helped give you another perspective and ideas on how to tackle enemy pilots tearing up the battlefield 🙂

Nope. As someone who is a * pilot but spends a lot of time on aa guns I can tell you that they are underpowered and it’s almost impossible to knock down a good pilot (the rookies are easy). When someone goes 130-0 in a round and a two msn squad in planes goes 250-0 in a round you know there’s a serious problem with the game balance on planes.
ps thanks for the advice but I’ve known all that since bf1 - which had balanced planes.

One other point I’d make is a large number of the aa guns seem to be set up in stupid positions where you can get easily sniped. So a good percentage of my deaths on aa guns in breakthrough(which is what I most;y play - conquest and the other modes is for noobs - is from level 2 campers sniping from the other side of the map.
