Click on defender closer to the ball issues

I'm on XSX and experience the same issue, that is if it will switch at all.

Someone on Reddit said to hold B or O and move the left thumbstick in the direction or the player you want to use but that doesn't always work either.

Player switching is notoriously broken with Madden and they simply use the same engine. They won’t fix it, they don’t care about the player experience. They just want your money and the least amount of effort to get it. 

This is preplay not during the play.
