Pretty sure at one time I was able to place teams in Canada. I know I had a Canadian school created. Or was I playing a 2K game back in the day and getting confused? I do know that you got to see a map and actually place the location of your school on the map. If I couldn't put it in Canada, maybe I just put it as close as I could. It's been a few years.
Pretty sure the game I recall didn't force me to replace a school with a created one. I was able to create independent schools and they'd eventually get a conference invite. At that point, the game I believe would choose one school from that conference to go independent. With today's tech and such, it would be cool to create indy schools and get invites and then the conference simply grows by one.
Back then where we chose to put our school was reflected in weather and pipelines and such. Because we didn't have to replace a school, we weren't forced (which I still don't understand the logic there) to absorb whatever characteristics of a random school that really has nothing to do with us or in many cases, is located nowhere near where our school is.
I would love more freedom though with the nonUS option. I was going to create a team in PR, but I don't like the generic aspect of nonUS.
I'm also wondering if Teambuilder is actually worth it when we have so much less control over our creation than we did even 15 years ago. Less jersey control. Less stadium control. Less location control. And the fact that as of right now you can't do an offline Dynasty with your teams is still baffling. I loved to create a bunch of teams and then play and recruit as them all. I don't need online access for that. And this isn't to avoid an XBOX Live membership as I already pay for that to play with my friends and family online.
There are a lot of things that need added to Teambuilder on top of fixing the issues that prevent many from even being able to create a school. Hopefully much of this is remedied in the near future. If it's not, EA will probably have seen its last penny from me. They announced the return of college football about 3 years ago. The fact that there are still so many problems and that Teambuilder was better a decade ago than it is now just doesn't make sense and doesn't leave one feeling like there's much hope for the future of this game. Which is sad, because I actually like the game play. I just don't like any of the actual schools in college football.
