Wrong pronunciation of college town name

I noticed in a YouTube compilation of all EA NCAA Football 26 team field entrance introductions, that the announcer pronounces Newark, the home of University of Delaware Fighting Blue Hens, as New-irk (nʊərk) rather than the correct pronunciation of New-ark.  

The much larger city of Newark in northern New Jersey is pronounced as New-irk.   As that city and its airport have much greater familiarity that may be why that pronunciation was used.
