Not if the infantry were operating from trenches on the battlefield, like infantry is supposed to.

I don't think so. The Vietnam war for example was quite a while after World War 1, if my memory serves correctly. 😉
In any case, it is the infantry soldier's job to seek cover. Walking over a plain open field, being an excellent target for everybody who sees you does not seem very clever to me.
Taking cover behind rocks, trees, vehicles, houses, whatever is available there and then - that is how infantry fights.
