problem loading C&C First Decade after win 10 upgrade

c&c first decade will not load since upgrading to windows 10. it worked fine with win 7, but froze up randomly after upgrade. I uninstalled it thinking a reinstall might help and now will not reinstall. Disc starts the installshield wizard, then stops. after several minutes pops up an error code [ -5006 : 8x000ffff ] has occurred while running setup. Error Code: -5006 : 0x8000ffff

  • @cebotopps Error codes like that "0x8000ffff" seem very abstract, but they are actually very useful; all you have to do is google them, together with the program that gave them (in this case, InstallShield), and you'll find out what the error is about is no time. A quick search got me this:

    Solution:

    1. Clean out the temp folder. To get there, open the Windows file explorer, type %temp% into the address bar and press [enter] to get there. Close any large programs you have running, then delete all files in there. If it complains about files it can't delete, just make it skip those.
    2. Corrupted InstallShield files. Go to C:\Program Files\Common Files\InstallShield\Professional\RunTime and delete or rename IsProBE.tlb then re-run the installer.

(adapted from http://mirabedini.com/blog/?p=330, but their way of getting to the temp folder was pretty contrived so I changed it)

I've heard other guides advice to just delete the entire InstallShield folder mentioned in the second piece; the CD installer will remake it anyway.
