I am currently playing in 2020 with the Origin copy of C&C RA2. I just had the exact same problem and found a solution.
On the Origin game start up page, I went on the cog right under the play button. I hit repair and it went through all the game file. After i booted the game normally i started a level and the minute explosion doesn't happen.
