I experienced similar issues when I inserted the battery, but the circuit breaker failed to illuminate and subsequently power the lift. The only way I could fix the problem was to restart the game, as I chose to overwrite my manual saves because I was not anticipating a game-breaking bug. I've read reports that this issue was also present in the original version.
