Almost No Sustained Background Music? Possible Audio Bug?

Hi Guys,

The audio in this game is extremely quiet for me. I have to set my speakers to max volume to hear stuff normally otherwise it sounds like everyone is whispering. It is 100% only dragon age.
Not only that, but there is no sustained background music at all. It lasts 4 seconds at max. To test this do the following:

Set Sound FX to 0 in the Audio settings.

You then will only be able to hear the background music and characters talking. I hear dead silence unless I talk to someone or maybe after a minute the background music starts and lasts for 4 seconds. I'm disappointed to say the least...

Also after playing for almost 80 hours, I haven't heard much party banter either (20 at max) which is apparently a known bug.
I have tried calling my horse, mounting and then un-mounting and then resting at camp but it does not seem to fix the issue

I'm playing on a newly built system:

Windows 8.1
i7 4790K
GTX 980

Dragon Age Settings:

Graphics: All set to max
Display: Windowed Fullscreen, No Vsync
Audio: Currently set to default (Home Theatre) with subtitles for conversations and ambient dialogue

Nothing else should matter I think...

I'll play around with different settings and see what I can find. Any help is much appreciated.

Thanks

Edit: Another issue entirely is that the benchmark option in dragon seems to be running at warp speed. I hear absolutely nothing except for a single roar at the end of the benchmark and the benchmark itself only takes 10 seconds due to how fast its running. What's going on there?

If you swap from Home Theatre to another mode, does this change at all? I've been trying to gather info on the Banter issue - which is anecdotally related - and have heard good things about toggling this mode. It seemed to help for my playthrough (I swapped to headphones), but I can't be sure if it actually changed things, or just stood out more because now I'm far more alert for banter.

    Hi there.

I also have the banter issue other people describe. For example, I have never used the party combo of Varric, Sera and Dorian and for 40 minutes, they did not say a word.

Anyway, I have constantly tried swapping the Audio settings to TV/Headphones/ whatever else there was and used it for hours at a time. The ingame volume didnt increase and neither could I hear the background music on all settings. Just the few 4 second interludes and then silence once more (aka can only hear birds tweeting etc)

Edit: Okay the Audio loudness issue seems to have been resolved by updating the audio driver to the newest version (Realtek HD Audio) located here:

Same here: no background music. T'is eery.

I hope the issue of the short main quest ( so short T'is silly ) is also a bug: patch 3: +10 hours of previously missing content! yea!

doesnt your geforce GPU have HD audio? Im sure it has. Right? In theory you dont need that realtek onboard device. I think your gpu would do better as your audio device. Just an idea - maybe im wrong. Although I had a gtx 660 and an onboard realtek device... kind of bugged me that the realtek device wast automaticly disabled, whats the use of two audio devices anyway? Only gives room for potential conflicts - I gather.

I also have this issue. What the hell?

  • a. The "No audio during the benchmark until the very end" is normal behaviour (dunno why.)

    b. There is a timer for "ambient music".  It isn't supposed to play all the time, and if you have a (relatively) slow rig it will play even less often as with so much else going on the timer doesn't expire as often as it might otherwise.

    c. Did you notice that this topic hasn't had a post in almost 3 years?  There isn't anything "wrong" and there isn't much you can do short of getting a replacement.
