Can't finish "Repentance" quest from Sebastian DLC

I started the Sebastian DLC and killed the mercenaries for him. Then in Act 2, in the quest "Repentance," we go to the Harriman mansion to find out why his family was killed. I made it through the ...

I ultimately finished the quest by hitting the ESC key. That unfroze everything. Still don't know why this problem happened in the first place.

This is a known issue and it actually gets worse in the act 3 quest of the Exiled Prince DLC.

Here's a fairly lengthy thread with a working solution in case you encounter more issues.
