Carver Approval not going up

(This is for the PS3 version of Dragon Age 2). I know that Friendship points with Carver are few and far between but for some reason he has stopped gaining them at all.

I played through for a bit and things were fine, decided to restart with a new character and for some reason dialogue choices that normally granted Carver rep no longer do so.  As an example, the choice to chastise Merrill when she summons a demon gave +5 approval with Aveline and Carver on my first playthrough but now only gives Aveline approval.  I looked up Carver approval answers and they almost never giev friendship points when I implement them.  I tried deleting all game data and reinstalling it on the Playstation 3 but that hasn't helped.  Any ideas?
