Cutscenes are still extremely laggy after patches.

Hi All,

Hardware:
CPU 8coreAMD 8350 FX 4.3ghz (overclocked)

8GB GSKILL RAM.
Single GPU 780ti (SC)
Nvidia driver: 347.09 (released 12/23)

0a. Graphics options are all ULTRA, with exception to the following:

* Multi-sample AA: Turned-off completely

* Post-Processing AA which is set to HIGH.

* Mesh Quality: set to HIGH.

(Note: I have not changed Gfx settings since i began playing this game.)

Played this game on launch day despite all of the 30fps cutscene lag etc. (I used the noteworthy -30/-60 arguments to test cutscene lag differences, but have since removed these lines from game shortcuts.)

I decided to take an extensive break in Hinterlands (Nov 24th) after Bioware responded to PC forum users to release several patches to address PC concerns (e.g. Cutscene lag, PC mouse-controls, directx crashes etc.)

Loaded the game up this week since patch rollouts, installed patch1 and patch 2; the game seems to run mostly the same with slight FPS improvement overall.

(Important note, I never had a single crash with this game before or after patch installation.)

0. My FPS using tracking w/ (Nvidia Geforce Experience) was roughly 47-57fps in crowded open-areas before patch, and feels slightly smoother after patches. (This is great!!!)

1. Cutscenes are still EXTREMELY laggy, if not worse after patch installation.

-- Seriously, how is anyone able to enjoy cutscenes in this game? I'm finding naturally theres a lot of conversational/cinematic cutscenes after finishing up hinterlands and adventuring elsewhere.

2. Another note: GPU usage suprisingly is %15-30 during cutscenes, meanwhile GPU usage during live gameplay is an expected 70-90% usage.
-- VRAM is also throttled down during cutscenes, so I can't understand WHY its such a laggy experience?...

Is anyone else experiencing dramatic cutscene lag (not so-much stutters, but significant choppy dips) worse than before after patch?

Is there a workaround or a fix on these forums that I'm missing? This is such an immersion breaker, its seriously getting to me. I would like to cry every time i meet a new individual in this game.

Please help...

  • I was having some major problems like you describe. Hitching and stuttering when entering/exiting cutscenes. Some cutscenes would tank FPS down to under 10 fps. Even zooming into the war table would cause this. Made the game damn near unplayable considering how many cutscenes there are.

Suddenly, I have it working perfectly (except for SLI flickering). Since you are running the same driver version as I am, we can count that out. I also read somewhere that the terrain setting may cause stuttering in cutscenes, so I did drop that down to "high" from "ultra".

Another thing is I am also now running flawless widescreen in the background (I am on a 21:9 aspect ratio monitor). FW made it so the cutscenes were no longer cropped at 16:9. The thing is, Hayden's notes on DA:I is that he fixed some directX issues when entering/exiting cutscenes. Perhaps he fixed it? Because now all cutscenes flow in and out of gameplay perfectly and stay at 60 fps. (I also put in the cutscene framerate command line option).

    -GameTime.MaxSimFps 59.91 -GameTime.ForceSimRate 59.91+

I put the framerate at .06 under the max refresh rate the game was reporting (in my case it is 59.97, hence the 59.91).

Not sure which of these changes fixed it, but now the game runs perfectly for me @3440x1440.

I would try running flawless widescreen (even if you don't technically need it for your monitor/monitors). See if it was Hayden's magic that fixed it.

I hope you can find the combo that works for you, because it is downright unpleasant if the FPS tank during cutscenes.

    I appreciate the response...

I will try your suggestions and let ya know.

I'm not at all familar with Hayden notes... I'll search for this wide-screen fix in a second.

    First thing I'll try.

    1. Terrain from ULTRA to HIGH.

    2. -GameTime.MaxSimFps 60 -GameTime.ForceSimRate 60+

    Thanks again, and happy holidays!

    Hey Xrayspex73,

    This -GameTime.MaxSimFps 59.91 -GameTime.ForceSimRate 59.91+ fixed my cutscene issues.

It's relatively smooth as butter now.

I had thought i came across some posts earlier, after patch1-2 were released, that it was necessary to remove those arguments from Game shortcut due to that being addressed in these patches... i guess i was wrong.

    Thanks man!
