DAI won't launch after new installation

I just got a new ASUS G752VY laptop. I installed Origin and DAI but the game won't load. The opening window, where I normally saw the marching soldiers on my old laptop, is just black, hangs, and then disappears. I never get to the screen that would allow me to start a new character. This happens no matter if I launch from the file itself or through Origin.

When first running the game, origin said it was getting the cloud backups to run.

The only thing I can think of that is different is that on my old machine, I had installed a couple of mods (ok, I like better hairstyles). Since I haven't been able to get it to run on the new machine, I don't have any mods installed.

Also, after this new installation, it looks like a windows update hung. I uninstalled the last update but that didn't do any good.

Here is the link to the dxdiag: http://hastebin.com/foreyuvehu.tex
I also attached it to this post.

Any advice?

Thanks,

Deirdre

  • @Deirdre531;  I think that was me on the Nexus Mods forum.  😇

And @Leora85 is correct: if you delete the "merged" folder each time you want to change mods, then run DAIMM, your version number should remain the same.

But you already figured out the real secret:  "If a save won't load, just increment the Version number until it does!"  🤓

Not sure why that is formatted that way.  sorry

  • @Deirdre531 Your GPU driver looks a bit old (October last year), have you checked for an updated one? Have you tried changing the graphics settings for the game with Nvidia GeForce experience? Might let you change things to see if that'll let you load it up at least.

Other than that, to me, your specs look like you shouldn't have any issues with this game. Hair mods shouldn't cause issues, but it's worth getting the game running before modding it, of course. 😛 I guess it could be an issue with Windows update doing strange things (after helping someone try to change windows update settings in windows 10, I can see they can be an issue), I don't use windows 10 so I can't be much help there.

Thanks for the suggestions.  As it turned out all I had to do was edit the 'package.mft' file.  There is a line in that file that says "version 12".  A person in the nexus mod forums told me that the mod manager increases that version number every time it is run.  He said that  "saves require that a certain value found in that file match the one that was present when the save was made".  I wasn't really sure how I was supposed to figure out what that number was, but I just changed the number 12 to 13 and it loaded just fine.

Thanks so much for taking the time to respond.

Oh, and I checked the driver version in device manager and it said the driver was up to date. Is checking via device manager as effective as actually going to nvidea's site and checking there?

Don't use device manager to check drivers for hardware such as GPUs, use the software from the manufacturer or go to their website, you don't want drivers from windows for such things. If you have Nvidia GeForce experience installed, it will let you know whenever there's a new driver. Otherwise, just check the website regularly.

I was going to mention the package.mft thing, but figured it'd be helpful to get your game running first. The package.mft file shouldn't stop the game from starting, it should only prevent you from loading saves made with a higher version number. The 'base' version number is 12 (which is patch 11, the final patch for the game released after Trespasser), so having used mods will put your version (in your saves) to 13. Generally it's best to get rid of a previous merged mod folder before doing a new merge, which should prevent your version from ever going above 13 (and things are just less likely to go wrong if you're not overwriting the same thing over and over). Still, glad you got it sorted. 🙂

Well thank you both!  I don't have the machine that has the mods installed at the moment; can you tell me the path to the 'merged" folder?

It should be in [drive] > Program Files > Origin Games > Dragon Age Inquisition > Update, a folder named Patch_ModManagerMerge if you let mod manager name it itself. 🙂

Remember if you're doing a merge for the first time on a fresh install of the game (patch 11), you might need to tick the 'force patch rescan' box in mod manager (only the first time), as they didn't release a new version for patch 11 as it only made some Trespasser related changes to the game, which had no effect on mods.
