Dragon Age 2 won't start

I've tried to alter all the configuration options (the launcher works but the game doesn't fire off) but to no avail.
Make sure you've installed the latest update, run the as an Administrator and that the game can access the internet without interference from antivirus/firewall programs.

RoboCobra's first post at the top mentions manually opening the "activation.exe" file; if all else fails that might be worth trying.
I've installed the latest patch I could find here; http://social.bioware.com/page/da2-patches
Tried running the activation.exe also as run as administrator still no cigar.
