Good news:
I tried the underclocking fix and it really seems to work as I could play for about 3 hours with no crash. Since I could never play for that long, that's at least a good sign. Will continue playing tomorrow and post here if it really works out.

It really seems like the game has some issue with factory overclocked cards, and it would be awesome if the devs could fix it in a patch in the future.
