Dragon Age Inquisition won't launch, or crashes at character creation

I have previously run Inquisition fine on my laptop -- it meets the specs and I last played just over a week ago.

However, when I came to play it today, it repeatedly crashed on launch, without error messages. Just the initial black window but then a return to the desktop and the Origin client.

I uninstalled and reinstalled Steam, uninstalled and reinstalled Origin, added an exception to my antivirus (AVG), and did a clean reboot. The game launched this time, but when I got to character creation (after choosing the race/class cards and importing a world state), it crashed again, still without an error message. This happened a second time; and now the game is back to not launching at all.

The only thing that's different is that today Origin did an update -- I don't know if that's affected it somehow?

  • Repair the game using either Origin or Steam, redo the exceptions through AVG(making sure it is the global exception and not scanning one).  As far as exceptions goes, make sure you put in Origin, DAI and the saves folder for DAI in the exception lists.  if this doesn't work, you may try giving us a DxDiag file per the how to post to get answers topic at the top of the forum.

I have now tried repairing the game, and added more files to AVG's exceptions list. However I am still getting the same problem. The game will sometimes launch, and I can get as far into a new game as importing a world state and the following loading screen. However at some point after that the screen goes black and the game immediately closes. I am not getting any error messages or issues before that point.

However, many times when I try opening the game, it hardly launches at all, sometimes getting as far as opening a blank black full-screen for a second before crashing.

    I have attached a DxDiag.

So I think the game is running fine now? Looking at the system, I found that AVG was responsible for most if not all of the crashes. I checked the exceptions and added a few more and now the game is running fine, I managed to get past the crash point twice and the game did not struggle to launch. So the problem seems solved for now.

LOL, yeah, Ashwooka.dll which is AVG and Avast strikes again.....glad to hear you got it going, and I have to wonder when AVG will fix this error that has been happening for years with zero fixes for it.    AVG took a game that was out of patching and made it not work without exclusions for reasons and haven't fixed it in all the years it has been going on.....anyway, again, glad you got it going, have fun and enjoy the game.

  • all I get is an error message saying that it is something on their end that is causing the game not to launch and it is only this one game that fails to launch for some reason.
